What I think, and I'm no fan of Putin, but realistically at the end of this war Russia is going to have some new territory and the US taxpayers are going to be out billions and billions of dollars AND be expected to help rebuild Ukraine at a cost of billions more.
So basically we're getting efed now and will get efed again on the rebuild and a few rich will get richer.

And of course, we COULD choose to not replicate the Vietnam gradualness that let that defeat be snatched from the jaws of victory. Everything we have given to Ukraine should have been done so in the first months. It is criminal how it was drawn out and delayed, ensuring more lives be lost and make everything more expensive no matter how it turns out. If Ukrainian pilots had been sent here to Luke and Davis-Monathan in April of last year, Ukies would be in full force across the Dnipro by now. Sevastopol would be a smoking ruin and Mariupol likely retaken. Russia would be begging for a truce openly. Heck, maybe one of the turds would have popped Putin in the brainpan by now.
But no,...instead we're doing what we usually do, which is fail to commit.

Rumors of Putin's ill health have been flying about for over a year. It has also been speculated that now would be an opportune time to have him do the typical Russian thing and up and die suddenly due to a rapid illness like nearly all of them do, so that Patrushev could seize the throne. The only thing preventing it, supposedly, is that all the other players behind the scenes all HATE Patrushev with a purple passion.
And this rumor, which has been going on for 2 weeks now, just refuses to die.

Nikolai Patrushev – a former head of the FSB security service and seen as Moscow’s most sinister spymaster – dressed in black and gave a eulogy to the autocrat which sounded more like an obituary.
Russia has been swamped by speculation that the warmonger died in late October and his role was taken over by a doppelgänger controlled by his most loyal security henchmen.
The rumours appear impossible and almost comical – and yet they only increase by the day.
And Putin’s ‘lover’ – Alina Kabaeva, 40 – has vanished and not been seen in public since the dictator was reported by several sources to have died on 26 October, two weeks ago.
The latest fantastical rumours came as a cringing video showed Putin today stumbling over the name of the president of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, during a rare foreign visit to his neighbouring state.
Some saw this as evidence that Putin has been replaced by a body double who had failed to learn his lines.

Despite those that claim Russian victory is inevitable and who focus on the few Russian successes, perhaps the most significant development of the war since the their massive retreat last year, Russia has officially lost the geographic barrier maintaining their hold on the south.

And this is why the counteroffensive has ended this year,...as it does every year during any war in Ukraine. This world-famous goop stopped the Germans 80 years ago. So mechanized operations are essentially suspended. For the duration of winter until the ground freezes over and solidifies, everything moves into an artillery phase.
