I read over your 5 posts in this thread and my guess is phosphate. That would have been a great 1st post in this thread.
Any particular brand? I saw some cheap ones like NBS on AR-15 Discounts on sale before for $50 or so. I've never heard of this brand and I would be weary of it. If you have suggestions though let me know what you purchase. I know I started this thread about finishes but brand/quality matters too.

I've got some NB, some Nitride, some Phosphate, and I honestly can't tell the difference in performance, unless it breaks suddenly, which, BTW, hasn't happened yet, and I shoot mostly steel case. You're gonna buy what you believe is the best by someone else telling you about their experiences, just as I've related mine. My knowledge of metallurgy is very limited, and I don't need a degree to find something that works consistently. My opinion of this subject will have little to no value to you, but, it's free, take it for what it's worth. I've gotten far more value out of some things than I thought possible, especially folding blades. My $5 Wally World specials have been holding up a hell of a lot longer than I thought they would, so, I'm not going to spend huge money on something that won't give me the exact same, or slightly better performance. If my blade cuts and performs like a very spendy microtech, why would I buy anything else?
I've had just as much fun with my $100 Escort Slugger as I do with my $1200 Tavor TS12. Performance and fun, that's what I buy, not "tactifool" stuff that costs a fortune and no one can discern a difference when using it.
Have a great, gun carryin', Kenpo day
