One day, all of that will be homes as far as you can see.
No it won't.

Google "St John's" and especially the area to the east of it to see why.

Thing about retiring is, you are usually old at that point. When you are old, you need to stay close to doctors and hospitals so "living in the middle of nowhere" is risky business. Living on the outskirts of somewhere works for me.

You do know there are doctors out in rural areas right? You don't need to live in/next to urban cesspools to see one. The problem with living on the "outskirts" is that pretty quickly you are no longer on the "outskirts" as the sprawl envelops you and they move further out.

Aside from something that requires multiple treatments a week, even more serious health issues can be taken care of with a trip to the city every so often. Heck even in 29 Palms we had to drive 80 miles each way for my wife's monthly pain management and many other specialist type appointments. Not all that different then how it is at our place in St John's (where sprawl is a non-issue) as the closest concentration of specialists and a hospital is 75 miles from our gate.

Met a couple of guys 10 years ago that were taking radiation therapy once a day, 5 days a week and they lived outside Florence in a pretty empty area.

They said the daily commute was killing them.

Pun intended?

Pretty much as I love black humor. I'm pretty sure one of them did die and the other recovered. Pretty sad to see them. They were great guys at a bad point in their lives.

For my 6 weeks of treatment at Mayo Clinic i had to rent hotel rooms at between 60 and 120 a night plus eating out every night. Couldn't see driving 600 miles RT every day.

You couldn't get a weekly rate? Or a short term house (vacation?) rental?

Tucson being a smaller city just means the good things are limited and spread out and the bad things appear like they are more concentrated.

That was a weekly rate... also negotiated with every discount I could get them to accept. One 'problem' was that rates are adjusted every week at the hotels based on what season it is and they kept going up (Oct-Nov). So I had to shop around week to week. Vacation rentals have hidden cleaning fees and other add-ons they don't mention in their advertised rate ad until you try to book one. The ACA was of very little help- they wanted to put us in a real dump for $30 a nite- ever go to an Extended Stay? they are the pit of the pits and house homeless to keep the rooms occupied...

Even if the " good things " were on two separate sides of town you could still get from one to another a heck of a lot quicker than you could if they were in Phoenix. You can drive all the way across Tucson in the time it takes you to get a couple miles in Phoenix.

Was just asking.

Doesn't sound like they do it there but in 29 Palms the hotels offer extended stay rates as there are so many contractors working for the Marines out here.

There wasn't a church or charity that might have helped?

I'm in Phoenix a lot for work and I don't disagree with you there. I guess what I meant as an example is this, South Tucson is a lot closer to where I live than say Maryvale is to a not shitty part of Phoenix for the same reason you stated. On the other hand, if I like a restaurant in Tucson, it is generally the only thing I like in that part of town, whereas Phoenix being a larger city, there might be other things to do/see/walk around near that said restaurant.
