I don't think this is as big of a deal as the OP thinks it is... There doesn't seem to be any such rule at Ben Avery. It looks like the Rio has had the rule for a while, but there's only a one (second or third hand) report of it actually being enforced.

I just read through the rules on Ben Avery and saw no sort of ban. Can you give me a link to the rule?

That's because there isn't one. The only rule that comes close is steel shot is banned for shotguns.

I was at Rio this morning shooting my AR and AK....no one questioned the type of ammo I was shooting. There were other shooters on the line shooting AK/SKS....not RO's bothered them.

It is in the rules at Rio;
16.NOSTEEL CORE, TRACER, ARMOR PIERCING OR INCENDIARY AMMUNITION OF ANY KIND IS ALLOWED.

Seems like a decent rule for an outdoor shooting range in the desert. Steel core ammo can cause sparks, sparks cause fire.

Really? Because I was there today, and when I signed in they made me open my bag, take out my ammo, remove it from the magazine, and give it to the range officer. A magnet was placed against the bullet, and then I was allowed to go in.

I don't have any first-hand info about Ben Avery. I was just told that by one of the RSOs at Rio.

Don't know what to tell you man...maybe you look like the kind of person who shoots steel core ammo. Or maybe they don't like you.

Either way, it doesn't really matter. It's their range, their rules. Don't bring steel core ammo.

They love me. I give the range officers heart palpatations.

Never heard of this at PRGC either other than the gongs at 200 yards. There was talk about steel case ammo not being allowed but I clean the main range every week there and the high power when I have time to clean the steel cases up. There is no evidence of fires at the club either caused by steel core but I actually witnesses one start on Table Mesa a couple years ago from someone shooting 855 ball. I think at the ranges it is not a problem and there is little vegetation to burn and people mostly hit the berms.

Also shooting at the steel has nothing to do with whether the bullet is steel. They're not armor-piercing, just have soft steel cores or jackets.
It beats up the steel and can cause sparks.

Yep

If the steel targets are getting beat up from steel core ammo then they need thicker targets.

Thicker targets?

Here is some 1" AR510 i hit with Federal XM855.

I stopped when I saw all the damage. If this were a range target, I don't see it living through a weekend of steel cored ammo.

An email went out to Rio Salado members recently;

"It has always been the policy not allow steel core ammo, however due to a recent fire caused by use of steel core ammo up at the main range the policy is now being enforced. The RSO’s are now tasked with checking every single shooter’s ammo with a magnet to ensure compliance with this policy. Please note - this policy is set in place by Game&Fish and is not up for discussion and is not affected by the Monsoon rains. From our website: Please be advised that any bi-metal, ammunition containing tracer, incendiary, armor piercing, steel jacketed or steel/tungsten/penetrator core projectiles are unsafe and prohibited - in other words, if your bullets attract a magnet - then leave them home! Thank you for helping keep our range a fun and safe place to go shooting!”

Never mind, I just got the email. It's Rio Salado

RIO Salado Sportsmans Club just sent an email affirming that no ammo attracted by a magnet is allowed at there ranges and RO's have been trained and instructed to check for it. Seems they had a fire started on the hill there and the rule is now in effect regardless of fire restrictions or moisture. So i guess if you want to shoot at RIO don't bring magnetic ammo. Its supposedly AZG&F rules not RIO management. But i believe AZG&F manages the land that the RIO range is on. I would be surprised that Ben Avery did not have the same rules in place if that's the case. https://www.rsscaz.com/assets/downloads/BANG!.pdf

Yea i remember when we backed the truck up to the line unloaded onto a bench and went to ro and checked in. Or during week there was no ro just do your thing. Those days are gone. Too many people in the mix now. I maintain membership at RIO but rarely go except to shoot hi power rifles.
