what, no love for the buckmark?
Actually...Pale Rider, Joelafives, and myself all mentioned and recommended the Browning Buckmark.

Another buckmark fan.

When I introduced my wife to shooting, she wanted to start her own collection and her first purchase was a Buckmark. This was probably 8-9 years ago. It has been consistently accurate and reliable. Also, we have used it to teach many of her friends how to properly handle and shoot pistols with it, as it is easily manipulated and easy to be "on target" with. Everytime we go shooting, it gets thrown in the range bag.

I fell in love with the M&P 22 compact. A svelte little handgun that all the women I've handed it to loved it. Only "malfunctions" I've ever had were trying out subsonic ammo that clearly stated it wouldn't cycle semi auto on the box. I've cleaned it once and it chugs along like a champ. It's the only semi auto 22 pistol I own, and will ever own.

+1 - seriously as it's 92% of a full-sized shield, operates flawlessly even with a suppressor without cleaning.

The S&W M&P 22s are both fun to shoot and easy for teaching beginners. So is the Ruger single six. Why didn't anyone say anything about the Advantage Arms 22 conversion kits?

I have an advantage arms .22 conversion for my G19 and it's stupid accurate, but magazines provide you with the excuse to learn how to clear a malfunction since my normal Glocks never have those problems.

S&W 617 10 shot revolver has always been my favorite 22 for plinking. Ruger MKII bull barrel would be a close second.

I will second the Ruger MKII.
Excellent guns that will last forever.
A little pain to take apart for cleaning at first , but once you get the hang of it they are not that bad.

I will third the Ruger MKII. but I would go with the MKIV because they have changed the way it tears down! instead of hitting it with a hammer to separate the barrel its just a button. MKIV is the MKII with easy tear down!

I have had a SW Victory, Sig Mosquito, and a 1911/22. My favorite and the only one I currently have is the M&P 22 standard size 4" barrel. I bought a cheap M&P Fobus owb holster and mag holder so I can practice drawing while saving some $$$. I swapped out the front sight for a fiber optic sight and it works well.

I taught my wife to shoot with a Ruger Standard. (Pre-MK1)
She grew up afraid of guns and this changed her mind... probably my favorite for that reason. Also a great gun anyway too...

every 22 pistol should come with min of 16 round magazine and at least 10 of them to have an enjoyable shoot, without breaking the bank, buying extras. i get the biggie on mag prices, but ca'mon 20 smackers for a extra mag made outta plastic and a little spring action.

Ruger mk2
Steger 22lr Luger-ish thing
Ruger single six
Action Arms 1911 conversion

Ruger charger. (buddy needed cash so I figured I'd turn it into a sbr)

in that order for me.

I'm going off in another direction and say that the Browning Buckmark is a fine .22 pistol. Looks better than the space-age Rugers too.
