Massive Explosion

A massive explosion happened in Beirut. I don't know exactly what it was, but from some of the videos, it looks like fireworks are going off before the big boom. I heard some reporting that they were bombed (which they obviously weren't) as they play themselves up to be victims of an attack. It looks like it was just a really terrible accident.

From the color of the smoke from the blast, I would assume a chemical storage or manufacturing plant.

Looks to be at the Port of Beirut which is nothing but massive rows of warehouses and shipping container storage. The fireworks likely got things started and then some other stored material, likely Ammonium Nitrate or Percolate finished things off.

You might be right. In some videos, you can see the surrounding buildings getting ripped to shreds before they're consumed by the cloud.

I think the guy filming this was close to 1km away so I think anything within that distance will have serious damage.

Lebanon is most definitely not a "third world sh*thole".

Beirut is a beautiful metropolitan area. It was THE place to be vacation in the 40's-60's.

Just like the US, there are good cities and bad. If you visited Detroit, you would think you are in a third world country. Beirut is much more developed than Detroit.

Due to geographical location, Lebanon has been ravaged by wars spilling over it's borders from neighboring Syria.

Varying sources are saying there was a massive cache of seized mining explosive that has been there for a few years...fireworks factory fire got out of control, spread to the stored explosive.
