Saw that, but never a solid number.

"It is unacceptable that a shipment of ammonium nitrate estimated at 2750 tons has been present for 6 years in a warehouse without taking preventive measures that endanger the safety of citizens." - Lebanese President Michel Aoun

President Michel Aoun tweeted it was "unacceptable" that 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate was stored unsafely.

Here's another intense perspective. All the airbags went off in the car.

That video from inside the car is interesting. Looks like his rear view mirror came off as well. He was on the highway just south of the warehouse, I measure the distance as just over 0.5km from the center of the warehouse that blew up. Fireworks going off in the northern most warehouse building, Ammonium Nitrate blast from the warehouse building just south of the fireworks and directly east of the silos.

I was curious about the distance. Did you notice that the sound of the blast was pretty much in sync with the video? I thought they might have even been closer than that.

The explosion sound at nearly the same time it is observed is a peculiar observation. Looking in to it some, I found this, "A pressure wave can travel through solids at a greater speed than through air. And this means a "pre sound" can reach you before the shock wave does - as the motion of the ground will in turn induce a sound wave in the adjacent air."

The shock wave was moving about 500m/s the ground wave could have been around 10x that speed.

Thanks for the info! I wouldn't have thought that much "pre-sound" could be transmitted through the earth, but I guess that thing made a minor earthquake happen.

There are varying reports of it registering between 3.3-4.5 on the Richter Scale. Though the shock from an explosion vs a real earthquake is like comparing apples to oranges.

One thing that is striking me as odd about this event is the fact that the silo right next door is still standing and I have yet to see pictures of a huge blast crater where the warehouse used to be.

Ammonium Nitrate is the lowest detonation velocity high explosive. Typically it has a priming agent mixed in to it to sensitize it, improve velocity, and yield efficiency which was not the case here. I think this was a fairly low yield explosion considering the amount of material that was there. It was more of a big push vs a shattering crack. When you look at the crater left by 500lb bombs you can hide a car in the hole left behind. Kind of like the difference in concussion between a black powder rifle and a 300 Win Mag.

The shape of silos many times leaves them standing, still damaged but standing. Being round much of the blast flows around rather than striking a flat wall. When i was taught demolition we were told to consider that kind of thing, shapes.

Hear it is, the half of the silo near the blast heavily damaged and a big crater. The crater looks to be as wide as the silos are long which is about 500ft.

Lebanon is quite religiously divers for the region, It has nearly as many Christians as Muslims.

Third world Sh*thole...just doin some cleansing!

Lebanon is most definitely not a "third world sh*thole".

Beirut is a beautiful metropolitan area. It was THE place to be vacation in the 40's-60's.

Just like the US, there are good cities and bad. If you visited Detroit, you would think you are in a third world country. Beirut is much more developed than Detroit.

Due to geographical location, Lebanon has been ravaged by wars spilling over it's borders from neighboring Syria.

OMFG, too funny. 🤣🤣🤣

Umm, detroit, chicago, minneapolis, portland, downtown dallas...etc....Yes, 3rd world sh*tholes

Ok this is some word of mouth from various armchair quarterbacks who might have some insight:

"reviewed a lot of the footage and through out a rough estimate that perhaps we were seeing an explosion that would be just under the equivalent of Hiroshima. It was well under of course — it is speculated that the blast was the equivalent of 12 Terajoules = 3 kilotons of TNT."

"Now while there are conflicting statements about what caused the Beirut explosion — it may be of some interest that radiation levels suddenly spiked more than ten times higher in areas of the Mediterranean Sea yesterday. Initial intelligence analysis from Italy indicated the explosion in Beirut was a failed-to-maintain-critical-mass Nuclear Blast. That means the blast started as a nuclear chain reaction, but the chain reaction failed partway through the event and nowhere near all of the radioactive core was used-up in the explosion. That failure of the chain reaction would significantly lessen the blast itself, but would leave some radiation, which we are now seeing at places hundreds of miles away." See CHART A
BeirutRegion-Radiation-24Hours.png

Other than the explosion in Beirut, there is no pattern or explanation for this sudden and tremendous increase in radiation. There was also speculation that perhaps the Orange smoke that was seen in the explosion could have been a chemical trigger compound called HMX. HMX can be used to trigger a nuclear charge which would leave a massive crater in its wake.

HMX, also called octogen, is a powerful and relatively insensitive nitroamine high explosive, chemically related to RDX. Like RDX, the compound’s name is the subject of much speculation, having been variously listed as High Melting Explosive, Her Majesty’s Explosive, High-velocity Military Explosive, or High-Molecular-weight RDX. HMX is used in melt-castable explosives when mixed with TNT, which as a class are referred to as “octols”. Additionally, polymer-bonded explosive compositions containing HMX are used in the manufacture of missile warheads and armor-piercing shaped charges.

There have also been many viral videos on the internet that have claimed that a drone launched a missile, however they are still being questioned as to their validity."

Back in the day, some folks I know used to play around with Ammonium Nitrate and detonated all kinds of experimental mixes based on it. In nearly all of those detonations, the cloud produced by the consumed mixture was a pale orange/reddish hue. Not nearly as dark as what we see in the video of the Beirut blast,...but I never witnessed anything larger than a 5 gallon bucket's worth, so the difference in volume could perhaps account for this?

Excerpt:
~~~~~~~~~~~~
The 1947 Texas City disaster was an industrial accident that occurred on April 16, 1947, in the Port of Texas City, Texas, at Galveston Bay. It was the deadliest industrial accident in United States history and one of history's largest non-nuclear explosions. A mid-morning fire started on board the French-registered vessel SS Grandcamp (docked in the port) and detonated her cargo of about 2,300 tons (about 2,100 metric tons) of ammonium nitrate.
