Homeless At Myrtle Beach

So watching the news this morning, they did a segment about the homeless at Myrtle Beach.

Journalist was asking the resident homeless what could be done to get them back into being a productive citizen and their living conditions.

One guy mentions something about losing his wife and kid is the reason he is there.

The journalist asks how many times he shoots up and the guy answers about 30 times a day. He then goes on to say that he gets his needles for free, drugs for free and food for free.

Here's the funny part.

My wife says " Don't people pay millions of dollars to live on beach front property? Why would they leave living the dream on a beach for free and free stuff?"

I honestly have no idea how to improve the homeless problem, but i do know it is getting worse, and telling them to go somewhere else isn't going to help.

I have zero sympathy for any of them. There are help wanted signs on every door and the state is kicking in $2k just to go to work. There’s millions upon millions spent on programs for those that need the help. Begging on the street corner and turning every bus stop into their personal shitter can’t be an option any longer. The problem would solve itself if morons would quit giving them money, but expecting people to act intelligently has never worked either.

A few things will fix it. But they aren't "PC".

1. Make camping illegal within any city limit.
2. Lower the felony shoplifting dollar limit to $1. Make it a Class 4 Felony.
3. A massive crack down on illegal drug use and possession. Hard crackdown...think the Sheriff in Rambo First Blood.
4. Make possession of a shopping cart outside of a 500 ft radius of it's source a Class 4 Felony.
5. Panhandling needs to be illegal (or actively enforce the laws already on the books).

I'd rather my tax dollars go to keeping them in jail, instead of them lowering home values, leaving trash and needles everywhere, causing crime, etc. At least in jail they may have a chance to kick the drug habit and get some help. Plus, we don't have to look at them.

Besides the few genuinely mentally ill people and families, it's 75% drug addicts.

I have to say, I agree with QuietM4. This is always such a touchy subject because people have a hard time setting their compassion aside to do what needs to be done for the good of the community and homeless population. The homeless need discipline just like my kids need discipline sometimes... That is unless I don't love my kids and care about them. Consequences and cracking down is the compassionate thing to do from my perspective, even if it is tough to stomach for a lot of people.

Had a homeless guy tell me... "I'm not going hungry. I know where there is food, shelter, and loose women. I have no worries about anything. I can do what ever I want, wherever I want. I have no responsibilities. Even if I do something illegal, what are the going to do, give me three hots and a cot? Sue or fine me? I have no money. Long story short.. while your pissed off at the world, busting your ass, getting f***ed by taxes, paying bills, paying alimony, and fighting with your women. I'm out here doing whatever I want living life. Now who's the crazy one?

I VERY rarely agree with The Accountant, but this is 1000% how I feel.

I have ZERO sympathy for them. Making a career out of welfare and homelessness is a conscious choice, and I am tired of my taxes subsidizing them. That said...FUGGEM.

Expensive solution housing people in prison over a $1.00 theft. I don't have the answer to the homeless problem though I do suspect incarceration over petty theft is not is not one of them.

Or, we do what Sheriff Joe did, put up some big tents, tall fences, feed them as cheaply as possible, and keep them far away from civilized folks.

Expensive solution housing people in prison over a $1.00 theft. I don't have the answer to the homeless problem though I do suspect incarceration over petty theft is not is not one of them.

It's not petty theft...it costs companies MILLIONS of dollars in lost revenue; they have to hire more loss prevention employees, spend more money on security systems, etc. All that extra cost gets passed onto consumers who actually pay for merchandise.

Los Angeles has spent over $400 MILLION on "combating the homeless problem" last year. They announced a plan to spend $1 BILLION on it next year. LA's homeless population has exploded over the past few years. Does nearly $1.5 BILLION seem expensive to you? The only measurable effect has been MORE HOMELESS.

LA has also increased the shoplifting amount to over $2,000 before they will do anything except issue a trespass warning or write a ticket. So, you can steal nearly anything you wish with zero consequence. All that stolen property gets sold to they can buy drugs. And the cycle continues.

Lock them all up. I'd rather spend tax money in productive ways, but here we are. LA decided to build tiny homes for them...at a cost of $8.6 MILLION for 103 beds. Do you know how many prison cells you could build for $8.6 MILLION? If you decide you no longer wish to be part of polite society, you no longer enjoy it's protections. Make no mistake, many homeless people WANT to be there.
