I am helping a recent widow sell her late husbands collection (only five guns). I don't have any experience with gun consignment. What is a fair rate to pay? Also, is the Blue Book of Gun Values a reliable source in determining what a firearm is worth?

i think 80% is pretty standard at most gun stores. Any reason you arent listing them here?

Do you mean the seller keeps 80% of the sale price and the shop keeps 20%? Does the buyer also pay sales tax?

Why not here? Mostly because of time.

Other than most members here are cheap bastards and won’t give her a fair price on them?

store keeps 20%, you get 80%. different stores have different policies though.

sales tax would be for the store to collect and the buyer to pay, not your problem

let us know if you find anyone good, Merchant Firearms used to be my goto for consignment but they have really upset me with their policies lately.

First it was no consignments because the owner wanted to clear out his inventory first, now its no consignments because the guns might have the covid cooties... whatever, I will be hard pressed to spend any more money there. Even had slow moving guns I was interested in buying with the consignment proceeds and they are still there.

Post up here and people could likely give a general idea of what they'd go for. She looking to get rid of them quicker to be done with it or not in a hurry so could take time getting more $ for them?

Absolutely this. If there is crap we’ll tell you. Unless he had 9mm handguns and tactical stuff I doubt it will sell very fast.

Jeff at AJI has been known to do things like this, but he buys them outright and sells them when he can.

One thing for sure is, you never know what will tickle some money out of a buyers pocket till you post whats for sale, i know of several here that buy collections as a whole. and usually at a decent price.
yeah some cheap folks on here, probably been called one myself, but a unit that begs a good price, is just that.
post'm up and give the yahoos here a chance to make offer or not. can't hurt, as noted takes nada but time
best of luck

↑↑↑↑↑↑ YEAH THAT ‼‼‼ ↑↑↑↑↑↑

All it takes is some pictures posted and you WILL get opinions.
No Commissions involved.
If the Widow is concerned about the buyers legality demand recorded sales.
It will not be popular ,,, but who cares. What ever it takes to get it done.
What ever does not sell for what is being asked take to a professional .

Best thing about Jeff is that he's 100% upfront. He'll tell you what hes buying it for, and what price he's going to sell it at.

Don’t take them to auction, is all I have to say about that! Tim I’d say list them here.

Why not an auction ?

Every time I listed a gun locally and it didn't sell I would then put it on gunbroker.
I have made more money listing guns on gunbroker than I ever could trying to sell them locally , even after their fee.
You sell something on gunbroker and it goes for $1500 their fee is right at $60.00
You sell something for the same at a gun store and they will charge you $150-300 or more depending on their commission. Usually the latter of the two.
Just start the auction at the least price you will take and let it ride.
The buyer also pays the shipping fees.

I am not against trying to sell locally , it does have it's advantages , but auctions have theirs also.

Setting prices when you haven't had the guns a while is hard If they were yours you would have paid attention whenever you saw a similar one. I would say if she needs the money quickly put them on here at your best estimate and see what happens.
