A Broken .357 Round...

Hey guys,
I have a question that I will put out to the forum... I think I know the answer but I would like to hear your opinion...
I loaded up some .357 Mag shot shells & gave a half a dozen of them to my brother... Unfortunately he dropped one & the plastic capsule broke off at the case mouth level spilling all the no. 8 shot out leaving a primed & powdered case...
My question is, how should I dispose of it? Should I put it in my Ruger & fire it off... Or should I write this one off & soak it in oil???

Any way to pry the remainder of the shot capsule out with a pocket knife or a corkscrew or something?

When fireforming Ackley improved rifle brass in send powder topped w “cream of wheat” down the tube held in w a small cleaning patch.

*IF* you were to fire it off…..what’s going down the barrel? If just powder, send it.

In the event you are not sure, take said round. Lay it on its side, shoot the primer out w your 22lr at about 25yds.

As a kid I’d shoot my dads 12g birdshot in this manner. It was tannerite before I knew what tannerite was.


Or drop it off w the RO on your next range trip. Don’t overthink this.

Since you're a reloader, get the remains of the shot capsule out, dump the powder or, if you are sure what it is, put it back in a bottle, and load the case with primer again.

and there you have it, treat just like a bad reloaded round of any type, break it down as noted above. pretty simple

There ya go.
I made some 45 colt "shot shells" eons ago and only fired off about 12 of the 24 I made. Found em years later. Broke em down. Melted the shot back down and removed the capsule, then turned em into 250gr rounds.

Surprised the primers were still good after close to 20 years of rolling around in various boxes.

Sorry. Have to go off topic. 80year old Ammo still shoots…..no way it’s ALWAYS been in some fellows spare bedroom.

Have you left a box outside for a few summers just to see what happens?

The time isn't what surprised me. It was the fact that it was still in the truck. It gets mighty hot inside. Near abouts 20 years of °160+.

That's what surprised me. I've had 45-70 from the turn of the century, 7mm FN mauser cgtg from 1910, 1913 38 long colt and 30-06 from 1922 that fired fine.
