I would drill a very small hole in the head of the projectile (small enough to seal it) and glue from the inside a cherry bomb or m-80 with the fuse out the head of the projectile. Light the fuse and then fire the cannon. That would be worth my time.

Used to make spud guns on the regular when my kids were younger and when grandma had no neighbors (had a good 1/4 mile of open desert behind her home where we could land taters without fear of broken windows or roofing tiles...). I also remember a youtube video about one that would shoot 20 oz mountain dew bottles - and the video of them shooting a bottle through a piece of plywood... (I want to say that I remember it being 3/4" floor plywood - but maybe that's just growth over time)
I've looked for that video a few times recently and couldn't find it.
