I once had the jacket from a 9MM come back and hit me in the shin.

It happens.
 
It's hard to see but he's got an open box of rounds next to him. Did a spent casing hit a round that was in the box right on the primer?
 
WOW, I missed that. I thought he got a hot casing down his shirt. I wear V necks so it happens... but not the ammo on the bench!!!
 
I had a PPSh41 that ejected the brass straight up. Always had to wear a shirt or jacket with a collar that buttoned up to keep that brass from going into my collar. Had many near misses.
 
There was an article about this in one of the gun mags around 8 or 9 years ago. Showed pics of ammo that went off when ejected brass hit a primer in the box of ammo. Not the same incident probably.

It's why I always put a lid on the box before starting to fire.
 
An old hippie buddy was shocked to find that ricocheted shrapnel tore right through the lower half of his bell-bottoms. Prolly woulda smarted a little bit, LOL
