While my spouse was undergoing hand therapy, she conversed with another patient who had one arm heavily bandaged from elbow down. She said he was articulate, well dressed, and maybe early 40's.
He confessed to having shot himself, with the bullet entering his palm and exiting the forearm resulting in a gruesome wound.
She asked for his line of work...

FIREARMS Instructor !

That was not "accidental", he violated one or more of the four rules, period. There are lots of "instructors" out there, with very little time on guns, all classes they managed to pass to get certs. to "instruct". This is the result.

Well,...lots of people CALL themselves things they are not.

When I was a young lad, one of my first jobs was working for Well Fargo Guard Services. I went through their little qualification course with a revolver and scored "expert". (Not challenging at all.) The qualification course was taught by the senior most Bubba good ol' boy who been round guns the longest; and yes, he held the title of "instructor". But he wasn't. I was only 19 but could have done his job more adroitly. But I'm sure when he was in mixed company and people asked what he did for a living, he probably said with great pride that he was a firearms instructor.

He wasn't "professhunul enuf"

This is why when I take apart my Glock (or any firearm that requires me to pull the trigger to release the slide) I am always very careful to not put anything in front of the muzzle except the floor.

Stupid should hurt.

If any of you guys think John Corriea of ASP is worth a shit, get his real history, I think you might be shocked at just how inept this guy is.

Having spoken to him many times, I concur. The majority of "firearms trainers" are full of BS.

I have no clue how competent he his as a firearms instructor... As a content creator and web-economy participant he's pretty competent... :-)

Lol! There was a time that many here thought old John Correia was the last Coke in the desert. Glad to see y'all came to your senses. What was that Ed Parker saying? "Time will either promote you or expose you."

We met with him a few times when he was doing Kenpo at some other guy's place many years ago. We went there to "enlighten" them with information. They said they had a "gun guy" didn't want anything to do with us. We met, f***ing useless. They were certainly amazed at what we were doing with Kenpo, but, their Chief Instructor warned them off of us, said we were just trouble, so they started ignoring us. Their "Chief Instructor" is also useless, but, he was the one giving them rank, and oddly enough, they were boosted in rank in a very short time, you know, to keep them paying. Skip Hancock is the Chief Instructor's name, talks a lot, does little, and has few skills. He was around when Parker was around and got some rank from him, so that's his "claim to fame". My instructor was Parker's protege', and another guy named Huk Planas. They both teach very differently, but they have the same information, and they're very choosy about who they give the most to. Mind you, I trained with Mr. Parker as well, in the W. LA studio, and got rank from him as well, but it doesn't mean squat if you don't have the information to back it up.

So, he was "wax on", and you're more "wax off"?

OK - I'm going to chime in here... just because I can't leave well enough alone.

* First - I have exactly zero knowledge regarding John Correia's relative competence as a martial artist... It sounds like he's probably gotten in with a school that is pretty commercial - that's too bad. On the other hand - whether he's good or not - if he's actively working on something - he spends more time on the mats than I do these days... (not proud of my nearly totally sedentary lifestyle... but it is what it is right now).
* Second - I have very little knowledge regarding his relative competence as a technical firearms instructor - I've never attended any of his in person stuff (paid or unpaid) and I've never been instructed by him or evaluated his shooting prowess. I've watched very little of his "technical" content (re gun drills etc.). What I have heard him say, that I appreciate, is along the lines of "if you are going to own and carry firearms it is irresponsible to do so without working on your craft... you have to spend time practicing, shooting, and becoming competent if you are going to be a responsible gun owner." With that - I fully agree.
* Lastly - I do find his Youtube channel useful in terms of its ability (and purpose - I think) to cause me to think through scenarios, and to take "mental reps" regarding defensive use of force scenarios. I find that he advocates for a very similar philosophy to mine in these areas (what I see as a legally and morally healthy view of when and how the force escalation continuum should work).

So - is he a bit of a self-aggrandizing blowhard? You could probably say that... but you could probably say that about just about everyone who has created a significant market presence in the social media space... and at least his stuff drives critical thought...

My 2 cents...

There are times that he give "very bad advice", hell, Carlos calls him out on it all the time. He's spent exactly zero hours as any sort of peace officer or soldier, so, his classes can't make up that experience. I make no claims about my shooting abilities, but, I can teach a beginner to shoot really well in about 30 minutes, especially chicks. They somehow just know how to point the gun where it needs to be, I don't try to understand why. I just teach them the basics, trigger control, recoil management, stance, and sight picture. What they do after that is on them.

Now, on the martial arts side, yea, technically, I'm an expert, according to rank and time, but, honestly, I'm still learning everyday about somethings I haven't seen, or, have somehow overlooked to have value. I constantly reinforce these ideas with active and resisting partners. If my guys can reverse, so can someone else, so, something still needs to be tweaked. I want my techniques to work on 90+ % of people, the other 10%, I'm not concerned with, they usually don't cause trouble for me, but that's why I carry a gun and a blade, for that one time they do and I'm outclassed.

Suffice to say that just about anyone who's anyone in the industry knows JC is a poser clown. I was there when he started- the Navy guy turned videogame store manager turned gun-guru. I encouraged him and advised him to stay in his lane when it comes to use of force videos. Well, he went to all these Mas Ayoob schools and gotten all these certs but never has carried or used a gun gun for a living. He started making judgements on LE UoF videos. I, again, reminded him to stay in his lane bc he's never worn a badge, gone to an ACTUAL LE academy -and no, community College is not a valid academy- nor has he served as a Firearms or UoF instructor in any LE capacity. He pretty much told me and several other well-known instructors to pound sand and blocked us.... fast forward a couple years and he's a running meme and his page isn't nearly as busy as it used to be.

Yes, he bills himself as a certified expert witness and if he was on the stand, any lawyer worth his salt would eviscerated his background pretty easily. He touts having watched over 5,000 hours of UoF incidents so he's a UoF expert.... riiiiight, I'm sure I've watched over 5,000 hours of Pornhub. Does that make me a human sexology expert? 🤷🏻‍♂️

Anyway, he's discredited himself thru his own antics. His shooting ability is ok (since very few people have actually seen him shoot or fight) judging from the few vids he's put out actually shooting. I must say, lately he's been looking a bit rough and not all there... Anyway, buyer beware.

I had a guy come into my studio one time. I asked him what he studied and he replied "jeet kune do". So I asked him where he got his training from, as I know some of the other big name instructors in that area. He told me, "I've watched every Bruce Lee movie ever made 10 times, I'm a black belt now". Guy was obviously off his rocker, but, I needed him out of my studio, so I just went along with tall tale and then asked him to leave as I had students coming soon. Weird sh t people say and do for sure.
