Where to Retire?

I'll second the comment about not mentioning Young. However, I am considering selling my place in Young and moving east.

I was in this biz for a while - $25K-45K just to turn the key on a Medical helicopter in AZ, then about $300/mile... pretty crazy.

With respect to the retirement location - My wife and I left Chandler last year after 35 yrs, now live in a small community south of Prescott. Best decision ever. Now the fact that there is a big fire less than 5 miles away from my house is a bit concerning, but hey...

One of the reasons I bought in the county, just north of Surprise was for the closeness of the old geezer medical centers. Even though I now have neighbors, I still love it out here. Quiet enough I still fall asleep on the patio. This is my retirement spot. Only way I'm leaving is in a bag. Gotta love Arizona!

Love it here in Oracle. It’s in Pinal County, cooler than the valley, and just a short ride to Oro Valley for shopping. Also can jump up the backside of Mt Lemmon and be in the pines…well what’s left of them anyways after the Big Horn Fire.

I am slowly easing into final retirement in Oro Valley. Winters are not too cold, and we like having Tucson nearby for "stuff". VA has a good facility there and a few relatives.

Prescott was my first choice, but winters and price wars for housing scared the wife off. She will likely outlive me, so her input is critical.

Curious where you guys plan on retiring? I dislike the valley. Air quality is poor, don’t like the heat, don’t like the traffic, don’t like the people.


I always wanted to move to Flagstaff but those prices would make it so I had to live in an apartment.

I like Goldilocks weather most days and I’d like to piss off my porch and not get laughed at.

So what’s everyone’s plan when they retire?

If you want to leave the state many options open up. Get on high ground where they have water in abundance.

we paid bout 695 per acre, but there were many plots at 14000 for 40...but nothing but flat. we are on side of a north facing mesa with 18-25 ft tall pinon pines and juniper with some pines fighting at top of property. dont know about todays prices.

For us - it will depend on what the kiddos do. If they all settle in the valley - we won't be going further than the White Mountains or Prescott. If they scatter - we'll likely end up somewhere rural where land is cheap (my pipe dream is to own enough land with enough backstop that I can shoot at distance on my own property (or into backstop that is public land - from my property). Right now Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Texas, and Kentucky are in play.

Gilbert is a good choice but Young AZ. might be what you describe.

Grew up in Oklahoma, OKC has been a shithole forever. I've never met as many people in one place that were just passing through to go out west and stopped OKC for the night or just for gas and got everything stolen from them. They'd been there for years afterwards not able to make enough money to move on.

If you're looking at OK, look at the eastern part. Grove (Grand Lake), Tahlequah (around Lake Tenkiller and the Lower Illinois River), Webbers Falls, Poteau, etc... Tulsa is a much better city to live in than OKC. Bartlesville is a nice small city.

You're not going to like the weather though. Cold winters with snow, flooding in the spring so if you buy near a river or lake, be sure you're on high ground, and hot humid summers. And of course, its right in the middle of tornedo alley.

We have contemplated Maine. Well aware of the weather issue, but we would like to be out and own property with water access. We have seen some pretty good prices and even commercial property that is reasonable. One thing I have found is they lack any form of decent Mexican food (Taco Bell better yelp reviews than most restaurants) and I can cook anything so maybe not full on retirement. Also we love seafood so that is another plus and why I would like water access or even a brackish tributary.

Low tax base, city, county, state, local medical services or lack there of makes a difference, our bodies start requiring a bit more attention, all adds up when you are on a fixed income.

That is an exposed intake for the generators etc at Hoover dam. Yes they have completed a "low Level" intake system to finish the drain. This may not be a move outta here event but water rates will be added to the list of bills that make you slam your mail down and get it tomorrow.

Island in central America will be my eventual retirement home. Building the infrastructure now, Zero property taxes, zero income taxes for economic citizens.
