Figure these a wealth of knowledge here and the cost is free.


Curious where you guys plan on retiring? I dislike the valley. Air quality is poor, don’t like the heat, don’t like the traffic, don’t like the people.


I always wanted to move to Flagstaff but those prices would make it so I had to live in an apartment.

I like Goldilocks weather most days and I’d like to piss off my porch and not get laughed at.

So what’s everyone’s plan when they retire?
 
If you like weather ... Pennsylvania is pretty sweet. Have to get way out in the boonies but prices weren't bad a bit ago. My ex bought a farm with some 10 acres relatively inexpensively. I believe the state is free of the crazy gun laws of say new york or Jersey.

I really liked Missouri ..You can get far from the city and find cheap land. I like to be near a place that has a city even if its 2 hours away. Nice to be able to enjoy "city" and then leave. At least when I was there Saint Louis was a fun town. Was still not the safest place to be but great food and music and I loved the wide open spaces of the Ozark. Humid as a MF'er though in the summer.

I love Florida .. but just to visit. My goodness I will take the 110 heat over having my balls swimming in soup all day.

Loved Louisiana but I am not sure its cheap anywhere anymore.

Most other places I have been to were hit and runs so I cant offer real life feedback.

Me .. This IS my retirement destination .. getting a little busy here in East mesa so there may be one more move to get further away from people but .. I have made enough big moves. Some smaller places east of phoenix that look interesting.
 
Gilbert Arizona for me.

Been in 48 states, lived in 9 of them and haven't found anyplace I like better.
 
I recently added 2 new checkboxes on my places to retire; decent Mexican food and a good local market for chiles, tortillas, and supplies. :obscene-smokingsombrero:

I agree. It’s getting real stuffy in the valley. Keep seeing CA plates on my street and the money for selling out looks better every day.
 
I have about 100 acres total between Show Low, Concho and St Johns. All less than $200 an acre. When I retire in a few years it will be here in Laveen in the winters and camping/homesteading up north in the summers. Cheap land, rivers and lakes and pretty much no neighbors.
 
Yep, you have to look at property taxes, sales taxes, state income taxes, license plate fees and whether they tax retirement income or SS income. Some places sound good until you do the math.

It might be worth a look.
Gilbert is a good choice but Young AZ. might be what you describe.

Ok is now like Calif in that mj has exploded big time, son in OKC at his friends business doin puter stuff...way more stoners than I thought ....Merle haggard sang about that mj in OKC times changed
 
I grew up here in the Valley & still live here... Each Summer gets tougher for me... I would like to head up North & get me some cold weather... Plus, my relatives live up there...
 
This thread takes me back to the longevity thread, and talk of retirement.

My wife and I have been looking at the PNW, mainly small towns. She’s from PA, and we have given some thought to what that may look like if we decided to head back east after I walk away from what I do now.

Big thing will be what a small house will run us, then just working PT to maintain our lifestyle.
 
Another thing to consider is your health.
If you can survive a two or three hour ambulance ride to a real hospital, no worries.
But in the sticks where we are, any major accident or heart attack requires a ride in
a medical helicopter that costs around $45k.
My neighbor did it twice, but died shortly after the second ride.

Ya but those helicopters work with the insurance company (if you have one) so you never pay a dime.

I choose Cochise County for my retirement land. Good price, low taxes, like minded individuals (but few and far between), but does cost more to build due to distance from construction workers for the things I don’t want to do.

Miss the woods of PA. Used to do a fair amount of hiking and riding out there.

Canoeing on the Delaware is hard to beat!

Young was one of the 3.
I have been trying, but I can't find it.
The other 2 were a lake in Louisiana and somewhere in Switzerland.

I keep leaning towards Young. That clean air is everything. The valley air is beyond problematic at this point.
 
I'll be buying some property back in the swamps of Southern Illinois, my family has been there since before the Civil War and its beautiful and quiet there. Ride horses, go fishing, repeat
