The title pretty much says it all- being it's Christmas time, we've got a hankerin' for some good home made tamales, and I expect many of you do too.
Can any of you suggest a place to put an order in for some- preferably in the east part of the Phx. valley [Mesa, AJ, Gilbert etc. area].
I know these take time; it's not like walking into a fast food joint, so I figured I'd better ask now!

I appreciate any suggestions, and Merry Christmas to everybody!

Costco has good tamales. And if you dont like them you can get your money back even it you just bring one back. Pork and beef are good.

My 'Ol lady is doing some next weekend...

One of the kids at work does a sh!t ton. Brought some in to the shop to sell. He/his wife would probably do a batch to your taste.. I can ask him Monday.

PM me for contact.

Oh you mean these things? I make my own. I use the dried chili pods boiled, ran through blender, strained, cooked down with pork shoulders and sometimes extra chili powder. I use mexican oregano in them as well Usually make 100 pounds of meat a year for them and freeze it in 10 pound bags. Masa I make myself using lard and chicken stock, baking powder and salt. I also spice the masa with chili powder. I make the chicken stock myself as well.

It really is not hard to do as most of the time is the cooking down of the chili pods, assembly and steaming. I usually do 20 dozen at a time and freeze what I don't give away. I make them consistent thickness of masa and a uniform amount of meat in each one and make them pretty much perfect, no masa stuck to the husk. Doing the same amount of masa and meat in each one makes them finish at the same time.

Yes, they do have good ones. We used to get ours from a Mexican gal Mrs. Flash worked with, but she's long gone now.

I have to second Costco Tamales. Bought a package of Pork the other day (3 bags of 5) and they are most excellent. Lots of Pork and good sized.

I have to totally disagree on the Costco garbage. I don't know what tamales you're buying, but the ones I bought there were f**king terrible tasting. As a native Arizonan, I know what good tamales are supposed to taste like.

Not disagreeing with you, I've never tried Costco's. But where do you think has the best?

Well, I'm a native Alaskan so maybe I don't know much about what tamales are supposed to taste like but I do know the ones I get from Costco taste just like the ones I got from a Mexican gal for years and years.

well tamales are all over the board, pending original joint they came from, the costco guys are palatable, but once you have the real deal, well, all else pales in comparison.
when the old gal and her ilk started making them, lets say they were just barely ok, but with a couple additions to the group, they are now and have been the last decade or so, been the go to tamale for us, the big group makes dozens of them, and here as with a lotta folks in Az. christmas tamales are the shitz.
its all in the filling, a lot you don't get shiat for filling some flavor and so forth

the tamale store is over on cave creek, and ill say for me its a loser, but again others milage may very,
good luck, and i did see a couple gals at the home depots all over town selling them at the drive thru wlak out, give'm a try before you buy,
happy saturday

Wife and the gals use to do a tamale party. I would cook up smoked pork and beef for filling. Quality varied year to year based on quantity of margaritas consumed, but still better than any commercial.

I had some from the tamale store the other day. I got some from Costco, the other day, also. I think the Costco ones are better.

I use to help my neighbor and her daughters make them. I was the only gringo and they thought I was loco. She was an old Mexican lady and hers were the best. She would add a little bit of beer to the masa. They masa was nice and fluffy, but so where the daughters.

Dang tamale store must have gone down hill lately if costco is beating them. They used to be phenomenal at the old location before they started stocking them in the freezer.

My favorite place for Tamales is just off of Grand Ave in Surprise. Red Eagle Tortilla Factory. They have fresh and frozen Tamales of all kinds. And they also have fresh tortillas. I buy there all year around.
