Water conservation is a serious problem that nearly everyone ignores. I don't know the numbers, but the water supply from the mountain areas would be improved if there were far fewer trees in the forests. Thanks to the Smokey Bear program, the forests have grown far too thick. In some places in my area the pine trees are so dense one cannot walk through them. There is a program going now (4FRI) which theoretically will thin the forests. IMO typical government corruption and inefficiency have crippled that attempt. There are large areas where small junipers are only a few feet apart and are spreading like weeds. Each of those plants is using water that could be put to better use.
