I'd love to see lists of War Film-relate of any era you like.

Currently watching World War II: A History of WWII Part 1

Here's list I enjoyed watching

The Longest Day

Iwo Jima: 60 Years of Silence

Band of Brothers

Battle for Sevastopol

Saving Private Ryan

Enemy at the Gates

Saints and Soldiers isn't too bad

The Pacific is decent, not as good as Band of Brothers

Run Silent, Run Deep

Midway

A Bridge Too Far

PT 109

Memphis Belle True story, slightly altered

For a different era and a true story, We Were Young, And Soldiers Not as good as the book, but a true story and not a bad flic.

I won't list the usual suspects. If you want to see something that's different (if you can find it), and one of the best things I've ever watched about WWII, then try this. It's called A Fighter Pilots Story : Quentin Aanenson. I recorded it off PBS years ago, but it's probably available from Amazon? I thought it was great.

Found this on youtube. It gives you an idea of what it's about:

Awesome, must watch documentary! The Greatest Story Never Told.

The Siege of Firebase Gloria is a good movie.
It is also based on a true story.

Unbroken is also a good movie based on a true story about a WWII pilot named Louis Zamperini that was shot down and captured by the Japs.

If you want to see the last of the true horse-mounted charges in color, watch THE LIGHT HORSEMEN about the Australian cavalry in WW1 Turkey. Lots of SMLE goodness and Mausers too. You'll finally learn the origin of the term "under the gun".

Five Came Back

Extraordinary. The War Department wanted WW2 to be recorded on film, so they recruited five famous movie directors, made them officers, and then provided them with soldiers who were assigned to be camera operators.

By adding that extra crewman to a bomber, for example, they got all that amazing footage we have all seen of bombers flying through flak, and the heartbreaking ones of bombers with wings shot off, and men in parachutes bailing out. But they couldn't put an extra person in a fighter, so that's how the gun camera was invented. All that footage we have seen of dogfights? The gun camera was invented by Hollywood people, to active the camera when the trigger was pressed.

All that video we have seen of D-Day? Never thought about it before, but ever wonder who was running the camera while all that craziness was going on?

Also an example of the days of American patriotism. Can you imagine Woody Allen or Michael Moore cooperating with and helping the military?

" 12 Strong " is another true story.
It is about the first soldiers ( Army SF ) that went into Afghanistan after 9-11 and fought on horses.
It is from the book " Horse Soldiers ".

For movies: Kelly's Heroes is always entertaining as is the Dirty Dozen & The Bridge on the River Kwai...
Documentaries: The old World at War series, narrated by Lawrence Olivier, was very well done...

"World at War" reminds me -- don't overlook "Victory At Sea," a classic for good reason.

I acquired a DVD of "Victory at Sea." It is interesting, but it was originally a 1/2 hour weekly show. After I got the DVD I noticed how many of the battle scenes were repeated.

One of my favorite sets of DVDs is "Band of Brothers." I thought about getting a copy of the book it was based on and read some of the reviews on Amazon. Many of the one star reviews claimed significant inaccuracies and bias in the stories. One of the reviewers suggested "Those Devils in Baggy Pants" as a more accurate depiction of what happened. Copies of that book are pricey, tho.

Both the Ken Burns documentaries on the Civil War and WWII are excellent.

I recently saw The Captain, a very odd true story of a Nazi soldier who went AWOL but found a Luftwaffe captain's uniform and pretended to be an internal military police enforcer, executing other deserters, looters, and other German criminals towards the end of the war.

It's so wacky I thought it was BS but did some cursory research after watching it and sure as shit, the guy really did that, although obviously events were dramatized for a movie.

"The imitation Game" - Pretty close to the facts story of Alan Turing who designed/built the machine that decoded Enigma machine messages. Not an "action" movie - but a sticks-to-the-truth film about a man who saved millions, only to be destroyed by his own government for being homosexual.

"Anthropoid" - another movie that sticks close to the facts about the covert mission/assassination in Praque to kill SS officer Reinhard Heydrich who was in control of "the final solution." Great movie.

"They shall not grow old" WW1 documentary feature tons of actual footage, some that has been sympathetically colorized. Luckily before they passed, someone was smart enough to interview several WW1 survivors and that is also included in the film as the narrative. I watched this, and rewatched, and rewatched. The footage is remarkable and amazing. Highly recommended.
