By way of background, Putin's henchman, Yevgeny Prigozhin, went to Russian prisons to recruit cannon fodder for his mafia-like Wagner Group paramilitary force. During the time of the Soviet Union Prigozhin spent 9 years in prison for robbery and fraud. Here is Prigozhin recruiting prisoners to join his Wagner crime family.

Prigozhin tells the prisoners that after 6 months fighting for Wagner they will be given an amnesty and released. In Russia, everyone lies to everyone else. It is a thing and is accepted. The Wagner Group has no intention of letting the prisoners who volunteer return home alive.
Yevgeny Nuzhin surrendered to Ukrainian Armed Forces. While in captivity, he made statements that were later published in which he said that he wanted to fight against Putin and Russia. He was to returned to the Russians in a prisoner swap. That sealed his fate.

The Wagner Group of mercenaries operates like a Cosa Nostra crime family. Loyalty to the caporegimes and the crime family boss is the only thing that really matters within this gang. Violating their rules has brutal repercussions.
