Some have a machine they put it in that tells the quality of the metal.
Most use an acid test. They rub the gold onto a stone and them put a drop of usually hydrochloric or nitric acid on the rub and see what color it turns.

Absolutely correct, but how many have one of those kits and where would you get one after the world turns to feces?

Acid testing would become pretty common. Right now any coin or pawn shop has the means, kits and the know-how would spread fast. a fine sharpening stone and acid would be the basics you need.

Another way, knowing the spec for dia & thickness, is to weigh the coin. fakes generally are too light however there are some fakes very close to the real thing - but those generally cost more to produce than the real is worth so whats the point?

Those aviator survival packs usually had Gold Sovereigns as they were recognized world wide. If your looking for gold for bribing ,the smallest gold coins are the Mexican Dos Peso - IIRC about 18 to the oz and the next smallest is the 2 1/2 peso... after that your into 1/10 oz bullion.

Just a tad bit of history,...a dollar was 1/20th of an ounce of gold,...which was the reason it was selected as the unit for our money. A gold "eagle" is 10 dollars, and a "double eagle" is 20 dollars, and are so marked. Ergo, this helps to illuminate how far our paper currency has fallen,...with a 1 ounce gold double eagle coin today fetching $1879,...shows you 1 dollar 150 years ago was worth about $95 bucks today.

There are lots of places to buy the kits on the internet for less than $20.
When the world turns to feces , gold is the last thing I will be thinking about.
