I thought Tucson was a liberal utopia, where’s the love?

EMTs have it tougher than I think a lot of people are aware of. I know I wasn't. I thought everyone was happy to hear the wailing siren of the ambulance and they were universally considered the good guys.

Until my first tour through College. Met a guy who was a Vietnam vet in a class. Cool guy and we got to talking. We were both taking med classes. He was an EMT and more schooling would make him more money. This is before they were merged with fire.

Omg the horror stories. See they are usually first on the scene and people are emotional.

He told me about going to "the hood" for a call to find a victim stabbed up good and gangbangers telling him if he touched the guy they would kill him. I think his exact quote from the group was ... " don't help him .. you just gonna let that nigga die"

Unhappy that he might save the stabbed up guy they warned the emt's not to touch him. He said in the begining he would argue with them and move to help anyway until one time when he was threatened at gun point. After that .. he just waited for the cops as the guy bled out.

He said this was regular and going to domestic calls where some guy just finished laying into his old lady would be the same. " Go on .. we just gonna let that bitch die"

wait for the cops.

Tough job!

I assume you're talking about New York and while I've only been there 3 or 4 times, I can't imagine what it's like to be an EMT there.

You couldn't pay me enough to be an EMT in that area.

Sounds like an ambush with fire being the bait.

South Tucson used to be a lot worse, shootings etc every day a couple decades ago. Apparently the police talked to Hells Angels about cleaning it up. Now theres still a lot of drug use and is a rough area. My bro used to be on the fire dept there. Part of the complexity is South Tucson is its own city etc.

EMT's working for private companies make crap wages and get paid straight time no matter how many hours worked.
Had a friend that did it for years and he had to work 80 hour weeks so he could pay the bills.

There is ALOT to this story, details will come out.

I know MANY firefighters with TFD and they are constantly attacked while waiting for TPD to arrive.

TPD is facing a myriad of problems: funding, attrition, and being vastly undermanned. TFD is paying the price for this, unfortunately.

In the 70's it was common in Chicago. There were areas that the Firemen and EMTs would not go until police cleared the area. The "projects" were multi floor apartments, the residents would drop large rocks, trash cans, Molotov cocktails down the stairwell onto the firefighters and EMTs as they tried to go up the stairs to help people.

TFD responds to DV calls every day, just like the incident yesterday.

They get the calls and show up to tend to injuries, etc. They often roll up before TPD or PCSO can arrive and have to deal with whatever craziness prompted the 911 call. Totally not in the job description for them, even as "first responders".

Anyone have more on the story? Christian college, football team, buff and not a bad looking guy. What the hell did he have to complain about?

Bet he couldn't beat the women off. But it was 7 years ago and things change.

Not a real answer, but the number of times he got in trouble for drugs in DOC means he probably had a pretty bad habit.
