Well, it looks like it is starting already. I was planning on going out to the desert today and I turn on the news to see a wildfire out near Hewitt station Road.. guess I gotta go somewhere else now.

do we know how it was started?? was it firearm-related? I hope not! what do you guys do in order to prevent fire when out shooting? does anyone else take precautions? I always clean up the range prior to shooting so I know I won't be starting any fires.

I'm never shooting at anything that should start a fire, but I always have a 5-gallon paint bucket of water on hand and a fire extinguisher if I'm shooting in the desert. I know starting a fire would be unlikely, but I don't want to be liable.

Didn't that who area out there burn this past year?

It is much more likely that the large amount of modified SxS UTVs running around caused the fire than shooters. Most of the shooting takes place against the hillside and into mostly cleared areas. The UTV guys are the ones running around with hot exhaust through the brush.

They aren’t saying what caused the fire. Me personally, I try to be extra cautious when out in the desert shooting, I would hate to be the cause of an area burning or getting shut down. Always try to pack more out than I bring.

From the forest service picture, I couldn’t tell where off Hewitt Station road the fire was located.

I know camping out there has been crazy the last few weeks. Story said that the fire started last night. Most likely a campfire that spread.

Ya, looks like a campfire. Forest Service just banned campfires.

No mention of shooting ... yet.

Are we sure it wasn't Billy Joel? For a guy who claims to have not started the fire, he sure is very defensive about it.

Every year, like clockwork. Wouldn't surprise me if the anti-gun crowd was starting these fires to get the shooting areas closed down.

We were about 5 miles south of Tonto Basin a couple of weeks ago and saw a few cars from Colorado camping and shooting.
The day after they left my wife noticed smoke coming from their campsite.
They had put a couple of inches of dirt over some of the half burnt logs and called it good.
Fortunately the creek was still flowing about 30 feet away.
It was such a big burn pit it took us about 25 gallons of water to kill it.

Some people shouldn't be allowed out of the city.

When shooting take a shovel and maybe even a fire extinguisher in case. Easy enough to do... and with a shovel alone you can put out most incipient fires easily.

No more ammunition for the anti gunners...”see shooting causes wild fires”
