9/11 was the beginning of the end for American freedom. The US government chose to respond by empowering government, and disempowering us. And the people, eager to "trade essential freedom for safety" (and inevitably getting neither), went along with it.

The Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism (USA PATRIOT) Act of 2001 created FISA courts, which were promptly used not to catch terrorists, but to wiretap Donald Trump. If you have a law that enables the government to chase terrorists, then all you need to do is redefine who is a terrorist: people who went to a rally at the Capitol on January 6, parents who spoke up at school board meetings, people who voted for Donald Trump, people who own guns. The USA PATRIOT Act enabled the gun-rights-hating Rudy Giuliani (along with his fellow Kerik) to get very rich, by rebranding himself as "America's Mayor" and using his "security consultant" business, Giulani Partners, to glom onto massive amounts of the money allocated for "national security." Donald Trump, who did many great things as President, has an unfortunate proclivity to choose bad associates, and so hitched up with Giulani, which has caused him a lot of problems.

9/11 was Obama's excuse to expand and prolong the war in Afghanistan, which expanded, not curtailed, the power of actual terrorists -- at the cost of killing and maiming many thousands of young Americans (but only the deplorable ones).

The massive, multi-billion dollar security theatre operation, which has Muslim women searching nuns at the airport, and has us taking off our shoes and belts, all came from 9/11 and the USA PATRIOT Act, even though the only change that was really needed was to put decent locks on the cockpit doors.

It was the terrorists' mission to destroy the country, and they succeeded, by inducing us to give more money and power to the government, and to restrict the rights of citizens. Allah Akhbar, baby -- they won.

And let's remember the four heroes of United Flight 93, who rushed the cockpit. They did not succeed in incapacitating the hijackers, but they did force them to abandon their plan to crash into the Capitol, and instead crash the plane in a remote field. That cost the passengers their lives, but saved hundreds or thousands more in Washington, DC.

Mark Bingham, Jeremy Glick, Tom Burnett and the leader of the group, Todd Beamer ("Let's roll"). May they be an inspiration to us all.

"Let's roll."

This man's name is Rick Rescorla.

22 years ago today, Rick disobeyed orders, and saved 2700 lives.

Rick was the head of security for Morgan Stanley in the South Tower of the World Trade Center. He warned that the Towers' basements were vulnerable to attack.

His warnings fell on deaf ears.

Then the 1993 attack happened, and people started listening to him.

After that attack, Rick implemented regular evacuation drills, using his megaphone to direct the thousands of employees out of their offices, down the stairwells, and out of the building to safety.

Born in Cornwall, Rick would sing Welsh and Cornish songs from his megaphone, as he directed the employees out of the building.

He would routinely tell all of the employees: in an emergency, no matter what chaos is happening around you, no matter what anyone tells you, leave your offices, go down the stairwells, and leave the building.

Rick told his wife Susan that he suspected another attack on the World Trade Center would happen, this time by air.

And 22 years ago today, on September 11, 2001, that attack happened.

When the first plane hit the North Tower, the Port Authority announced over the South Tower's speaker system "Please do not leave the building. This area is secure."

Rick ignored them.

"The dumb sons of b------s told me not to evacuate," he said to his best friend Dan. "They said it's just Building One. I told them I'm getting my people the f--k out of here."

And so Rick picked up his megaphone as he had done so many times before, told his employees not to listen to the orders, and directed them out of the building.

His Cornish songs helped keep their nerves calm as they evacuated, even after the second plane hit their Tower.

Once he had successfully evacuated his employees, Rick went back to look for survivors.

But first, he called his wife Susan.

"Stop crying. I have to get these people out safely. If something should happen to me, I want you to know I've never been happier. You made my life."

Rick rushed back to the South Tower.

That was the last time anyone saw him alive.

All but 6 of the more than 2700 Morgan Stanley employees survived.

Had they obeyed the Port Authority, they would all be dead.

Thankfully, they listened to Rick instead.

Rest in Peace, Rick. Thank you for your service.

He was a hero long before that when he participated in the Battle of Ia Drang with Lt. Col Hal Moore (We Were Soldiers Once...and Young). His picture is even on the book cover.

I just learned an interesting bit of information about the surviving firefighters who were on scene that day;....

According to Steve Buscemi, who was with NYFD before becoming an actor and who rejoined his old firehouse for a week to volunteer at ground zero, we have now lost to cancer as many NYFD personnel from their exposure to the asbestos debris as those that perished in the event that day. And we are on pace to lose even more to those same cancers as the years accumulate.

So when you see the numbers of how many first responders died on 9/11,...you should make a mental note to actually double it.

Thanks for sharing the story about Rick Rescorla, I had not heard that either .

Here's an eye witness and survivor telling about how Rick guided her out.
