They could not convict Mr. Rittenhouse, so they executed his rifle with all of the reverence of the execution of Mr. Coffey in the film The Green Mile. Although in my opinion, there was better acting in the movie versus this news video clip.

Rittenhouse agreed to have it destroyed and I would guess the audience of this drama were potential future protestors/looters so that the State can say "we did something" and as a visual scapegoat to carry away the sins of the State.
