Oppenheimer is sure to revive some debates about the end of WWII. Worth noting: Purple Heart medals awarded in Korea, Vietnam, the Gulf, War on Terror—all 370,000 since 1945—were manufactured for the anticipated invasion of Japan. We have 120,000 remaining.

A couple more

While trying to work out the math of yield, blast force, etc. There were theories floated that showed detonation of an atomic weapon could ignite the atmosphere and destroy the world. All be it a very low probability, your government pushed the button anyway.

If successful, the first targets for the bomb were German city's. Germany just lost before we could nuke them, so we're not racist for using it on Japan.

Be thankful it was used. Sorry to all those who died in advance, but let's pretend Japan surrendered on 29 July, 1945. The bombs aren't dropped and there is no practical demonstration of their horror. The world doesn't stop inventing, The USSR still develops theirs. Fast forward to 1951 and now we have a stockpile of nukes, no one has seen a practical demo, so the military is in charge their deployment cause it's just a bigger bomb. How does that story end?
