The Arizona Rifle Teams have returned from the National Matches at Camp Perry OH!

The Arizona Scorpions Junior High Power Rifle Team & coaches

We spent a great week with 1000 of our closest AR-15 & M1 toting friends! I will have a write up shortly on my website http://arizona-rifleshooting.com/ but the folks at Desert Sharpshooters http://www.desertsharpshooters.com/ , who run most of the 600 & 1000 yd matches at Ben Avery, sent out a pretty good write-up of Perry & Atterbury.

In the CMP's President's 100 Rifle Match local shooters Jacob B, Bill P, Jason H, and Jeff S all received their President's 100 Badge. This is the second badge received for both Jacob B and Bill P.

Arizona Scorpions Junior High Power Team Members Jacob B and Albert R, with Coach Ken R, secured 6th place in the Freedom Fire 2 Man Team Trophy Match, and were awarded Freedom Fire Medals.

ASRPA Scorpions Junior Team #1, which consists of shooters; Jacob B, Albert R, McKenna B, Maximus D, Avery M, Weston H, and Coach Ken R and Team Captain Randy J, Secured 4th place overall among junior teams for the Minuteman Trophy Match during the National Trophy Team Match.

Local prone shooter, Oliver M, took home a 4th Place overall win in the US International Fullbore - Target Rifle National Championships held at Camp Atterbury, Indiana. Additionally he also won the Day 2 Aggregate, the Day 4 Aggregate, and placed 3rd in the Day 5 Aggregate. Oliver also won the Day 2 500 Yard Match, the Day 2 900 Yard Match, the Day 3 300 Yard Match, the Day 4 300 Yard Match, the Day 4 500 Yard Match, and the Day 5 500 Yard Match.

In the US International Fullbore - Target Rifle National Championships held at Camp Atterbury, Indiana, Local prone shooter, Jeffrey Miles, won the Day 5 Aggregate and the Day 5 1000 Yard Match.

In the US International Fullbore - Target Rifle National Championships held at Camp Atterbury, Indiana, Local prone shooter, Robert G, won the Day 2 600 Yard Match.

I will also post a bunch of information about Service Rifle Shooting, Prone/F-class shooting and how you can get involved! We need new shooters every year per the rules and the Scorpions Junior team needs a constant influx of teenagers to replace those who turn 20 and age-out. Kaycie B, junior shooter for the Wickenburg High School Rifle Team, won the High Junior Category at the Capitan Regional F-Class Championships held in Capitan, NM.


Nathan S, junior shooter for the Wickenburg High School Rifle Team, won the Master Class at the Capitan Regional F-Class Championships held in Capitan, NM.


Local prone shooter, Oliver M, took home a 2nd Place overall win in the NRA US National Mid Range Championships held at Camp Atterbury, Indiana. Oliver was shooting a Palma Rifle (.308 Win with Iron sights) against the Any Rifles (Any cartridge with iron or optical sights). Additionally he also won the Palma Rifle Mid Range Championships, the Day 1 Aggregate, a Day 2 600 Yard Match, the Day 3 300 Yard Match, the Day 3 500 yard Match, and placed 2nd in the Day 3 Aggregate.


In the NRA US National Mid Range Championships held at Camp Atterbury, Indiana, Local prone shooter, Robert G, won Iron and Optic Aggregate. Additionally, Robert won the High Master Class, Grand Senior Category, a Day 2 600 Yard Match, and placed 2nd in the Day 2 Aggregate.

This video, from someone in Minnesota has some really great scenes from the National Matches at Camp Perry this year!

CMP High Power Rifle competition (NRA rules are nearly identical) consists of 200yd STanding, 200yd sitting Rapid fire, 300yd Prone Rapid fire and 600yd Prone slow fire! Usually with a scoped AR-15 service rifle, but M1, M1A and iron-sighted AR15A2 a also classified as "Service Rifle". There are also fun matches for M1 Carbines (100yd, see 19:40 in the video) and Springfields etc. about 95% of shooters use the AR15 type rifle, but a lot of scenes in this video show M1 shooters.

Many of the scenes are filmed at a distance so the target looks like its 15 feet in front of the shooters. No, its full distance!

20 seconds into the video you see the opening ceremony at 7AM every morning consisting of a Cannon Blast and the Star Spangled Banner. No one kneeled.

Starting around 5:30, and again at 12:00 you see the 200yd Standing Stage of one of the team matches.

Starting around 8:40 you get to see a close up of the rifles in 300 yd prone rapid rifle. In rapid fire we shoot 10 rounds with a magazine change in 70 seconds. As a legacy of the M1 days we normally shoot 2 and reload with 8 rounds. The first shooter had a malfunction, cleared it and put in his "oh shit" magazine and finished the string. At 10:55 you see the shooter using his ECI to check that his 2nd magazine has exactly 8 rds just before starting.

Around 11:30 you see the "shooter shuttle" used to transport shooters from the 600yd line to the pits.

Starting around 12:30 you see sitting rapid with the coach right behind the shooter in the team match.

16:00 600yd prone starts.

You can see the entire team scrounging and sorting brass and counting ammo around 17:45 to 18:45, we all reload!

Starting right at about 19 minutes into the video, you get a brief showing of the Army team shooting the National Trophy Infantry Team match, popularly known as "Rattle Battle" because its all rapid fire starting at 600 yards! This is a FUN match!

There were over 1000 shooters at Camp Perry, probably 30 from Arizona and others with ties to AZ, not many appear in this video. Former Arizona highpower shooter and Rio Salado Sportsmans Club High Power Rifle division director Larry W, who moved to MN a dozen years ago, appears prominently in this video, mostly coaching a pair of M1 shooters in the team match! I even caught a momentary glimpse of myself in the video in the target pits just before firing started at 4:16.

I've already posted a few times about Camp Perry. Let me fill in a bit more info.

NRA/CMP style High Power Rifle competition consists of 4 stages, Standing slow, 200yd, sitting rapid, 200yd, prone rapid 300yd and prone slow 600yd. 10 or 20 shots each. Usually with an AR-15. I have a write up about it on my website http://arizona-rifleshooting.com/Service-HP-Rifle.html

The annual US National Championships Shooting Competitions, the "National Matches", have been held at the Ohio National Guard Base "Camp Perry" since 1907! The National Matches are run by what is now known as the Civilian Marksmanship Program. https://thecmp.org/

The "official" National Matches consist of Service Pistol and Service Rifle Matches interspersed with numerous other matches, smallbore and long range rifle, pistol and training clinics run by the CMP.

There were over 30 Arizonans at Camp Perry for Rifle stages of the National Matches the first week of August.

About half the Arizona shooters drove to Ohio and brought the equipment out for those who flew (usually due to lack of vacation time). Several of them arrived the week before for the CMP Cup rifle matches and posted very good scores.

The National Matches proper start with a training clinic called "Small Arms Firing School" or SAFS, and a practice day on the weekend of 31-July/1-Aug.

Monday 2-August is named "The President's Match". It is a 30 shot match at 200, 300 and 600yds, slow fire and rapid fire 3 of the stages described above. The top 100 shooters win a very prestigeous award called "President's Hundred". FIVE Arizona Shooters made the 100 this year! The top 20 shooters go into a shoot-off after then main match.

Tuesday is the National Trophy Individual match. A similar 50-shot match to Monday's, adding the 200yd sitting rapid fire stage. This is an "Excellence In Competition" match, shooters must place in the top 10% of EIC matches over and over again to earn the Distinguished Rifleman Badge. During the course of the last year, two Arizonans (both teenagers) have become Distinguished Riflemen and were awarded their badges at Camp Perry. "Going Distinguished" is a very big honor! Only about than 2500 civilians have earned the Distinguished Rifleman badge in over 100 years. Wednesday was the first two of the team matches. This adult match called "Hearst Doubles" (named after the donor of a trophy long ago) is the same 30 shot course of fire as the President's Match but 2 shooters side by side take turns shooting while spotting the wind and coaching each other. Out of 220 adult teams, a team from AZ placed 72.

At the same time on a different range at Camp Perry was the National Junior Team Match. 2 Shooters fire the 50 shot course of fire as in the NTI above, typically with an adult coaching them, and AZ has some great coaches! The top AZ junior team pair (of 5 pairs from AZ) placed 6th out of the 58 teams in the match.

Thursday was the National Trophy Team Match, 6 shooters who take turns shooting and coaching each other. This is a very prestigeous match. The structure of the match is quite a bit different than the Hearst Doubles. It is a 50 shot instead of 30 shot and alternating 6 shooters mean you never shoot and coach at the same time as in Hearst. The Phoenix Rod & Gun Club team placed about 30th out of 58 teams, but they were beat by the AZ Scorpions who placed about 20th!

Friday, 6-Aug, was the most fun match of the week! Its named the National Trophy Infantry Team Match, but we call it "Rattle Battle". This is very different from the other days shooting! Shooters don't get to bring their spotting scopes, they are completely dependent upon their coaches. Its all rapid fire starting at 600yds then walking as a group forward to 500 then 300 then 200 yds. There are 8 targets and 6 shooters so there is some strategy to who shoots what. We actually practiced this at PRGC & Ben Avery numerous times in the months leading up to Camp Perry and something went wrong anyway.... the PRGC Team was ranked about 31 out of 41 teams competing. Uncharacteristically, the AZ Scorpions did even worse than the adults!

That afternoon is the awards ceremony and CMP continues with a bunch of fun "Games" matches for Carbines, M1 Garands, Springfields etc (these are not part of the official National Trophy matches).

Many of us stay in huts on base, its like being at summer camp... with 1000 other folks who have AR-15s!

Additionally, beyond the scope of this post, several Arizona Pistol Shooters, mostly from PRGC, travelled to Camp Perry in mid-July for the Pistol stages of the National Matches. This type of Bullseye Pistol shooting consists of shooting .22 or centerfire pistol at 25 or 50 yards one handed, slow fire or 2 different speeds of rapid fire. I'll post more about this sport later.

Shooters!

Sorry for the late notice, but if you want to learn more about this sport, we are shooting at Rio Salado/Usury Pass tomorrow (saturday 21aug21) starting 7:30 or so.

Spectators are welcome and I encourage those new to the sport to come watch a shoot before diving in and shooting.

Tomorrow's will be fairly beginner-friendly since it will all be at 200 yds (the target is 12" black on 4' wide cardboard).

bring eye and ear protection and binoculars or spotting scope... or heck bring a rifle and 100rds of ammo!
