Steel bullet bans

How are you guys dealing with these steel bullet bans at the ranges? Rio, Ben Avery, PRGC, none of them allow ammo with steel cores or jackets.

The range officers told me emphatically that it's 100% permanent.

I deal with it by not having to shoot at a range.

Though my former range in CA never had any such ban.

Are the RO's actually checking your ammunition choice? I would just shoot what I brought. Steel should not be attracting attention the way a tracer round would. Interesting stuff you are having to put up with.

I guess I'm not seeing what the problem is here. Especially at the indoor faculties. The steel core ammo is considerably more damaging to their stuff if you accidentally hit it.

Virtually all affordable 7.92x57, 7.62x39, and 7.62x54R has steel bullet material.

The range officers are actually checking the ammo with magnets.

I once shot at an indoor range for a year that had a "no reloads" policy. Showed them the same 4 boxes of factory ammo every week for a year.

I was at Rio salado a few weeks ago blasting away wolf bimetal out of an sks. I can't imagine a ban on that would help their cause, especially since they are finally not being complete buttholes on the line.

A friend I contacted today said that he normally shoots there every week, but hasn't been for around 3 or 4 weeks at this point.

He said he's never had his ammo checked.

Don't shoot at any of their steel targets, and you won't have a problem.

You guys are still not quite getting it.

At Rio and Ben Avery they now have the same rules because it's done by Game & Fish. Furthermore, they are actively checking everyone's ammo, so it's not a question of shooting at the steel or not shooting at the steel. Also shooting at the steel has nothing to do with whether the bullet is steel. They're not armor-piercing, just have soft steel cores or jackets.

This rule change happened within the last month. For instance, they walked up to a girl shooting her AK and told her to stop.

I swear ranges have enacted more bans on ammunition than politicians. Should have known their attitude turn around was too good to be true. Fudds will be fudds i guess.

I was at Rio this morning shooting my AR and AK....no one questioned the type of ammo I was shooting. There were other shooters on the line shooting AK/SKS....not RO's bothered them.

It is in the rules at Rio;
16.NOSTEEL CORE, TRACER, ARMOR PIERCING OR INCENDIARY AMMUNITION OF ANY KIND IS ALLOWED.

Seems like a decent rule for an outdoor shooting range in the desert. Steel core ammo can cause sparks, sparks cause fire.
