If you saw the movie 12 STRONG, you know the story of the first Green Berets on the ground in Afghanistan after 9/11. And you will then also know General Dostrom, the Afghan leader those Green Berets were tasked with assisting to fight the Taliban. Dostrom had been fighting the Taliban since they first emerged, and hated them with a passion. He later became Vice President of Afghanistan from 2014 to 2020.
Dostrum is a patriot to his country and has returned to fighting the Taliban. Rashid Dostum is reported to have reached the Panjshir Valley, where Afghan Vice President Amrullah Saleh and Afghan politician Ahmed Shah Masood are already present. He is on the warpath against the Taliban.
An excellent book about the man, THE LAST WARLORD, was written in 2013, before he became Vice President. https://www.amazon.com/Last-Warlord-Warrior.../dp/1613748000
This man has fought harder for Afghanistan than most. He began as a draftee into national service. Then the Soviets invaded, and he defected to the mujihadeen, where he became a legendary commander, who was rarely defeated. When the Soviets left, he fought the Taliban as they began their struggle to capture and rule Afghanistan. Then, after 9/11, he worked beside Americans. For decades, he has been knee-deep in it all.
Dostrum has been hard to kill so far, but things are different now. We may not hear from him again. I recommend reading the book about him before he perishes in the mountains.
