I believe it is usually considered cheaper (in the long run) to work less people more hours then to cover the costs of benefits and retirement on a larger number.

I also think this is a bit over blown. I would like to meet the person that could pull double shifts for 3 yrs straight (especially as an LEO) with out having a breakdown, health issues and/or getting divorced.

Be that as it may, the solution is simple. Peg retirement to base salary, thus the only way to increase pension is through advancement and/or longevity.

In a DPS job I would imagine it's pretty easy as they spend a lot of time sitting on the side of the road watching cars go by.

Anyhow, they don't have to work all that many double shifts as they go into time and a half at least and probably double time pretty quickly. Let's assume for purposes of argument that they only get time and a half, so how many hours per week do they have to work extra to double their pay?

The answer is 26.7. So they've only got to work 66.7 hours a week. If they work Saturday and Sunday, then they only have to work one day double shift and 2.7 hours extra on a second day. All very doable.

When I worked for others in an Electronic Engineering position, we were told that if we didn't work at least 60 hours a week (no overtime, we were salaried) then we were out of a job. If you only worked 60 you could pretty much count on never getting promoted but you wouldn't get RIF'd either.

When I started my business years ago I commonly worked 80 to 100 hours a week for the first 2 years, then went down to 70 or so thereafter with occasional 80 to 100 hour weeks. Pretty easily done.

Well, I just got my oldest truck smogged and paid the renewal fee. Here's the beakdown:

Fees for a 2 year renewal are:
Veh License Tax $20.00
Registration $8.25
Air Quality $3.00
Public Safety $64.00
Total $95.25

So if it weren't for the hijacking of our money to give it to DPS which they don't need, I would've paid $35.25. So it didn't double for me, it almost tripled.

This fee should have been put to a vote but instead it was a decree.
This is an even bigger rip than the OHV stickers.

From what I understand, a bill has been passed that will reduce the fee from $32 down to $18 in the summer (assuming governor signs it - which he likely will), and then eliminates it entirely after 2 years. Not great, but better than status-quo.

I was told that when the RED for ED occurred and Ducey gave them the raise that he snagged the funds from DPS to pay for the raise. His answer to the budget short fall is the "Publice Safety Fee".

Really want this repealed or nuked. Bunch of crap!!!

Dan...

that's correct, but see my post above.

Here: https://www.azcentral.com/story/news/politics/arizona/2019/05/22/deal-reached-repeal-32-vehicle-registration-fee-over-two-years-senator-says/1197085001/

It's also reported that she had an affair with a staffer and got a divorce as a result.

Either way, she worked to get this fee overturned, so she's a good one to have in office.

Wonder what happened to Pamela Gorman. She was another good rep that was very gun-friendly. She kinda disappeared after losing in the 2010 District 3 primary for US Congress.

I hope that includes a refund for those who paid it with 5 year renewals.

No it does not, if you read the article - and I understand why they wouldn't.

Read the article - they state that ADOT said that one-year renewals are significantly more plentiful now because of the anticipation that the fees will go away next year. Seems odd though as the savings for a 2 year versus 1 year registration renewal likely nets you more savings than paying the reduced fee for a year. Math.

So if I had only renewed my registration for 1 year instead of 2, I'd have saved $16.00

Not worth even thinking about.

Agreed. That's what I understood.

Maybe the lawmakers should get some officers to hand out the notification about license plates. If new residents have jobs or kids in school they must get an AZ plate. But no city or the state enforces that.

How about busting down on these snowbirds driving around with their out of state plates? Minnesota, Wisconsin, Alberta, Saskatchewan...all without a bit of rust on them, you know damn well the vehicles are kept down here year round for them to use...if they're used here, they should be plated here, make 'em pay up, just like the rest of us...

Now, as far as this Public Safety Fee goes...weren't the Dems screaming about how 'requiring everyone to have a drivers license to vote' is an Economically Discriminatory Policy that places a 'financial hardship' on minorities? Even though it applies to everyone, doesn't this Public Safety Fee also do exactly the same thing? We once had a rebellion over TEA TAX in this country, there should be riots in the streets over this Public Safety Fee.

It's ridiculous, you are keep a vehicle for a longer time here in Arizona because it doesn't rust out, after all those years you finally get into the lowest fee category for registration, and they hit you with this new TAX, effectively doubling your costs.

You know, to play devil's advocate... just because your vehicle is older doesn't mean that it causes less wear on the roads than a 2019 model vehicle. Shouldn't registration cost be the same cost for a 2019 car and a 1999 car?

Yes, you're absolutely correct....so let's make registration $10 a year for every vehicle out there...
