picked up a Springfield 1842 musket...

A friend of mine decided he'd rather have a few bucks than this wall-hanger, so I drug it home with me. It looks to have been in a fire at some point (charred stock with missing section), but the metal doesn't appear to have been affected? Maybe the metal wasn't in the stock at the time of the fire? I don't know...

Anyway, I'm trying to find another stock and maybe a few other bits like a bayonet, tools and other related items. Repro stocks are out there, but definitely not cheap (~$325 from Dunlap Woodcrafts). I guess it'll be nearly impossible to find a decent original.

Here's a few pics if you'd like to see it; not much to look at right now. .69 caliber, smoothbore This thing is so long, it won't even fit in my safe unless I lean it over...lol.

I probably won't do much to it outside of putting a new stock on it. I'd like to find an original, beat-up stock that resembles the same amount of wear on the rest of the rifle. I imagine it'll end up hanging on the wall with a few other oldies at some point.

Thanks for the link; I haven't seen that site yet. I sent them an email for a quote on stock repair; we'll see what they have to say. In the meantime, I'll keep searching for a replacement. No luck at SAR...

I heard back from Lodgewood the other day, and they said that they could splice in a piece of wood and repair it, but it would cost way more than a donor rifle would likely cost. I'll just keep my eyes peeled for a replacement stock or a donor gun. If I get too impatient I may try splicing in a chunk of walnut myself and make it look like a "field repair."
