One dead after gun malfunction in Lackawanna County

One of the guys I shoot with who's on my squad at C2 blew up a .45 ACP a few weeks ago. I wasn't there when it happened.

I'd told the guy many times to pay more attention to what he was doing, but people do what they want.

I don't use a powder cop or a lock out die, I look into each and every case. Never had an overcharge, never had a squib.

Powder cop - Die that either provides visual confirmation that the round is charged/correctly charged, and/or locks the progressive press from advancing if the charge is incorrect or not present.

I use the Hornady one when I'm loading bottleneck rifle (particularly 223) because it can sometimes be difficult to quickly inspect the inside of the case.

Does anybody know what the cartridge was? S&W .500? .45/70? Black powder maybe? Handgun? Rifle? Shotgun?

Sometimes I use an old 45-70 case when I'm loading pistol ammunition. I have hash marks on the side of the case to help me estimate the charge.
Since I drink heavily, I usually get it wrong though.

I wouldn't worry. Still sounds reasonably precise. You can't be THAT far off.

To avoid an overcharge, I always make sure when seating the bullet that the powder is pushed out between the bullet and the casing evenly. :)

Seriously, be alert a squib can happen to anyone, reloaded or manufactured ammo.

Thanks for posting the reminder OP.

I've had 3 squib loads. All with factory reloads for hand guns. Makes a little pop sound and you think to yourself, did I hear that right?

I have also witnessed a hand gun explode when a guy in our group shot it. The only injury he had was a little blood coming out in the center of his forehead from some shrapnel. Someone in our group put a sticky target on it.

He reloaded the rounds himself, so we figured he double charged the round.
