The CIA was recruiting for new agents. Over one hundred men and women applied. After weeks of extensive testing, background checks and training, all but three had washed out. Those three, two men and a women, reported to the training office for their final exam.
The first male applicant was taken into the office and told the exam would verify that as an agent he would follow his assignment exactly as instructed, regardless of circumstances or personal feelings. He was then told his wife was in the adjoining office. The instructor handed him a pistol and told to go in the office and kill her. The applicant looked at the pistol and the instructor and said as much as he wanted to be a CIA Agent he couldn’t kill his wife.
He was dismissed and the second male applicant was brought in and given the same instructions. He took the pistol, opened the office door and went in. A minute later he came out with tears running down his cheeks. He said: “I tried but I couldn’t bring myself to shoot her.”
After he was dismissed the female applicant was brought in and given the same briefing, her husband was in the office next door. She took the pistol, and entered the office, closing the door behind her. The instructor then heard several shots, screaming, shouting and furniture being smashed in the next room. Then it went silent.
After five minutes she came out, wiping blood and sweat off her face, handed him the pistol and said “Some idiot loaded the gun with blanks so I had to strangle him.”
