They get interest free loans during the no pay period. The government will cover the interest to the banks after the shut down is over. Now they get a bonus just for showing up to do their job.

But they don't do their jobs. I read an article recently about how they fail 95% of the time to detect contraband that's being sneaked in by other employees to check on their performance.

So they don't even do their job when they're there.
 
As usual "faux" outrage is in effect.

The only thing that "might" go wrong is that after 30 days, the POTUS can do a reduction in force and lay off all these non essential employees. As much as that would suck for them, it's not likely to happen. Then they get to go back to work with full back pay and in this case a bonus.

Yea, 30+ day paid vacation in addition to whatever leave they earn anyway, yea, cry me a river.
 
Sooo, I dislike the TSA as much as the next guy. They are pretty much useless in the best of times. But they are people who are having to go to work and they are not receiving pay. A loan is a good way to put gas in the car and pay some rent so you can ACTUALLY make it into work.

I repeat, I detest the TSA. But the average TSA person at the airport makes shit money, and now they aren't even getting that. The average pay for an airport security worker is 25K to 38K. Not the easiest thing to have thousands of bucks put away for emergencies when you make 25k.

My only point being that for 420,000 people, this isn't a paid vacation. Sure they're gonna see a nice fat paycheck when they DO get paid, but they aren't being paid anything to cover their expenses right now, even though they have to be at work.

I was an Assistant Vice President at a bank for a few years when I was young and stupid and let me offer an opinion.

All these folks have to do is call their mortgage holder/landlord/bank/credit card company, explain the situation and I'll guarantee you they'll be given dispensation until the paychecks come in. They can't afford the bad press that would happen if they didn't.

I'm sure you're right. Not to mention the general loss of income by foreclosing on somebody who is generally good about paying. They usually don't get what the amount of the defaulted loan from an auction. Or at least, they weren't during the big crash a decade ago.

On the other hand, if you're living hand to mouth, there are other concerns. If you aren't being paid but still have to go to work, it might be difficult to even put gas in your car. Those who live a half hour or more away from work due to cost of living are suddenly finding this a major problem. Especially those who are working without pay in a place as expensive as Washington D.C.

There is a possibility that I'm more sympathetic than most due to the fact that I'm one of those people who works as a GS civilian. I am still getting paid however. Thank God. I only recently switched jobs and moved, so my reserves are almost nonexistent. If I was in the same boat, I have no idea what I would do, as my job is deemed Emergency Mission Essential. That means that I work whether I'm getting paid or not.
 
Well, here's another thought. Get a bank or Credit Union Loan. I guarantee you they'll give you one as long as your credit's not totally in the toilet.

What I'm saying is these folks all have a ton of options that the media's not talking about.
