Safety question, but is it a good idea to keep powder in a safe? (That pic looks like a safe.) I always figured powder in a thick metal container would make a pretty effective bomb in a fire. I’ve always stored powder outside the safe.

Any powder storage recommendations from the powder companies always state that you need a container that will open outward easily to let the gases escape if the powder should catch fire.

I would not do a photo that included primers or powder as some asshole firefighter who has power to investigate could nail you on storage violations as there are limits which went down recently on how many pounds and how many thousands of primers you can legally store.

Exception would be if they were all empty and wanted to screw with them and prove they watch forums.

Got a link to that?

I know there are suggested storage methods for various amounts of powder and primers, but I've never seen or heard of limits on either one.

good example is brunos, he cannot keep powder in his show room, has to keep in a special area for explosives. i've seen the regs, not sure if recommended or mandated, been some time, but wtf, screw'm gotta find ya first

Because he is a distributor/retailer... different rules.

https://www.phoenix.gov/firesite/Documents/2018%20Chapter%2056.pdf

Refer to section 5606.4 (I think). I'm sure other cities have similar codes.

5601.1 Exception 4 state general limits of "1lb black powder", "20lbs smokeless powder" and "10k small arms primers"

But 5606.4 mentions "not exceeding 50 lbs" of smokeless powder.

So.... yeah, about that.

Years ago, I knew a firefighter who told me "nobody cares about your reloading stash" unless you do other stupid stuff. Then they may use it against you.

Actually that whole pdf doesn't apply to any of us that I'm aware of except for any dealers we have on the board. It applies to "commercial and industrial occupancies."

About this chapter: Chapter 56 prescribes minimum requirements for the safe manufacture, storage, handling and use of explosives,
ammu- nition and blasting agents for commercial and industrial occupancies

I can't find a clear "residential storage" code. If anyone does, it would be interesting to see.

I found one residential page that referenced section 56 of the code I copied earlier but now I can't find that link again.
