New BA Public Range

Thanks for the info. 2'-3' is far to big for me to get good practice on. For PRS/NRL type shooting a 3"-6" target at 300y is what we train for (2moa). I have steel and spraypaint and would be happy to let people shoot it. I would love to be able to shoot steel close to home, right now I drive 2 hours to get practice in. I hope it gets more popular and maybe that can even expand it, or let us have rifle steel match at Ben Avery. This type of shooting is growing faster than any other discipline of shooting and I think there is room. I will still try to come out and shoot one of the weekends.

Doesn't DPS already have their own range at Ben Avery?

Yep, built and paid for by DPS. If you have a user group, you can request to use that range when they aren't using it. I've used both their classroom and range to teach classes.

So then why do they need to reserve this range from M-F each week in addition to having that one already?

I had to think about what you meant. When I said the new range was used by LE M-F, I meant all LE (ie Phx PD, Sheriff, Scottsdale PD, Glendale PD, etc). I suspect DPS will only occasionally use. For now, they are gauging interest. If interest is high, they plan to expand public access.

On a side note, I spotted a couple of shot up autos behind the DPS building. When I asked about it, was told traffic stop practice.

Just an update -

Cost is now $12. Also pays for access to main range.
Open the second and third weekend of the month.
Both steel and paper available.

So, open this coming weekend. Very different from the main range in a positive way.

Thanks! I went by ba Saturday and asked about the range, rules and steel setup. Sounds like they are trying. I might try to make it if I'm not at the cowtown match. Lower price definitely helps too.

I live near BA and if not dirt shooting go there regularly. Go early, even on weekend, no problem. Alternatively go at lunchtime as people are creatures of habit and leave to eat.
