I really REALLY dislike when I hear “happy Memorial Day” or how somehow our brothers in arms greatest sacrifice has turned into a sale on a couch or bedroom set.

I guess I just miss my friends and it feels disrespectful.

I wish footage of all the worst wars were played ALL day, on every channel. Distress calls played on the radio so they can hear the rasp in our voices calling in for support.

I wish people REALLY understood.

How do you fellows handle it?

"You can't even wrap your mind around the kind of pain that our fallen heroes went through, or their families went through," he explains. "So putting our bodies through some kind of suffering in remembrance for them is a great way to honor their sacrifice and what they did."

Great post. Thank you Smithers. I appreciate having something more polite to add when Monday rolls around.

I always will mention to someone when they say "Happy". I will say "Actually it's a day for remembrance and reflection to those that gave their all for our rights and freedom. Veteran's Day is a "Happy" day though. Usually I get a polite reply.

I appreciate you sharing. I might have to try out this line.

When my kids were little, we went to the veterans cemetery to put flags on the graves. I suppose folks are still doing that these days.

I try to make it to a range, toting some memorabilia of "absent companians," and send a few rounds down range. Think of the better times when they were around and remember them as living examples of what men should be. Kinda glad they aren't here to see what our world is now, but still miss them.

Oh they all know how to say thank you for your service but it is like pre recorded its what people say. Sadly almost all are looking forward to the long weekend, indy 500 and BBQ. How can they be thankful with no idea whatsoever of what people endured. They paid their taxes, and you did the job, they have the same concern for vets who did their job about the same as a reliable landscaper thanks . All volunteer military I think somehow factors in as everyone got drafted in the 60s did their two and out, then they knew. Only volunteers now know the true horror show. Embed the reporters never let them roam free to put the mess on 6 oclock dinner news every night. Only see what is approved.

This is a great thread guys! I agree with you Doc 100%. I really like smithers599 idea of taking kids (or anyone for that matter) to a Veteran cemetery and placing flowers. It's always good to remember while some of us gave something some people gave everything.

There are more and more companies that are starting realize that having blowout sales on holidays such as this are not exactly the best to remember those who served and still serve. It reminds me of when I went to Israel a few years back and most of their holidays are remembrances holidays. So instead of saying "happy", you'd say "good" or "blessed". Not sure "good" fits this one, but I am honored of my family who served and those who have served, and continue to serve.
