You do realize germs are transmitted by vectors right? A sneeze, cough, breathing. In this case it is water droplets. There is other ways they spread, but we are talking about masks.
So to use your analogy, your bung hole, cheeks, underwear and jeans will do a great job by stopping the ecoli from that wet fart from spreading, by blocking the liquid fecal matter. Now if you walked around naked and farted on someones face, they could easily get sick or catch pink eye. Or if you dig your hand in your ass and tub a door knob, if that person rubs their eye after without washing their hands, they'll get sick.
A surgical mask, bandanna is slowing the spread of the transmission. Whether it be breath, coughing, or sneezing. All of which people do a poor job at before all this started, by either not covering it at all, or using their hand and then touching a surface etc. Now if you have a mask like a N95, or respirator then it will protect you if that bug is in the air. But seeing that we literally don't know enough N95 masks for everyone right now, the next best step is to limit the number of bugs in the air.
