Sixteen percent of Americans in a new Gallup poll reported smoking marijuana, up from 12 percent last year and more than double the all-time low of 7 percent. "

Fewer Americans, at 11 percent, reported smoking cigarettes in the past week, down from 16 percent last year and a far fall from a peak at 45 percent in the 1950s.

It’s the highest percentage of reported marijuana use and the lowest percentage of past-week cigarette use since Gallup started asking those questions in 2013 and 1944, respectively.

Nearly half of U.S. adults now report having tried marijuana, up from 4 percent when Gallup first surveyed about its use in 1969.

Despite increasingly common use of the drug, Americans remain evenly split on whether marijuana is having a negative or positive effect on society.

Yet more than two-thirds of Americans, at 68 percent, think the drug should be legal, a record-high maintained from last year’s polling.

Six states could vote on ballot measures legalizing marijuana in the November midterm elections, and should they pass, will join 19 others in legalizing recreational marijuana.

Conducted July 5-26, the surveys on marijuana and tobacco use polled 1,013 U.S. adults and had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4 percentage points at the 95 percent confidence level.

The advertising, for the last 30 years easy, vilifies Tobacco use and its users but to listen to the same word of mouth from the media regarding pot and pot is the new cure for cancer. At least 2 generations have come up with the negative tobacco messaging so its not a surprise.

Now .. I don't have a single thing against pot smoking or for that matter tobacco use ... Just an observation. I think I have heard or read that pot helps with everything from Glaucoma to anal warts but one Marlboro will make your kids and your kids kids retarded. Bah ..

I cant figure out how taking smoke into your lungs regardless of the type of smoke is good for you but having been alive a long time, long enough to remember making ash trays for my parents in public school arts and crafts .. its funny reading and hearing the general thoughts on pot use vs tobacco use and tobacco is treated very differently than pot use.

Me .. I dont mind pot use, Dont mind tobacco or alcohol use but .. stop trying to sell me that its the next best thing to insulin. Stop being disingenuous. Want to get a buzz and its your tool of choice .. have at it but dont make it sound any more noble or necessary than any other intoxicant.

Just makes one more group of people I have to be worried about. I always had to worry about Drunks but They usually had a time and place so I knew if I were out riding friday or saturday night I had to have my head on a swivel but then they added Phone zombies and that changed things.

About a year ago now I was out shooting with a board member out in the desert way up the 60. On the way back I had a strong smell of what I thought was an actual skunk. Turns out the guy driving in front of us with his sun roof open was Smoking some nasty smelling refer. Just puffin along while going 70mph. It was about 8:30 am!!!

Just one more reason to maybe get back into a car and give up on two wheels after 42 years

Lol I love the “freedom for me but not for thee” viewpoint in this thread.

I can guarantee you that if you had 50 potheads in one room and 50 drunks in another you would have two totally different rooms.

The main reason pot would “be a gateway to other drugs” is the fact it was illegal and sold NEXT to others. Most potheads just want to smoke weed and that’s it.

But I mean it’s cool though let’s continue to give synthetic heroin to high schoolers and pretend that it doesn’t lead to opioid abuse.

Driving while stoned should be treated like a DUI, absolutely. But on its own, it’s extremely mild in contrast on what the damage I’ve seen alcohol unleash on peoples live. Not to mention due to banning it, the unintended consequence of such was the creation of the “AFT”.

Interesting part of the states supposed tax gain is not revealing itself, many states are seeing it as a bane, break even due to cost of policing, ect. just what i've read, and of course the growers who jumped in with all their nethers, have found out the market crashed some due to over grow, and then there is the black market on the product, and if one is to believe the newsies, then cali comi land is the new meccas for the cartel growers, and i can say have a few older acquaintances who did live in the areas and they had no go places, for what its worth,
good fire would cure that, something comiland is never short of especially since their gubermint spent all the fire protection money and prep money on other things, and yah, guess what it wasn't on water retention.

Im in the same arena with the better than other previous legal drugs group. I've seen plenty of bar fights caused by alcohol. Honestly can't think I've ever seen two stoners get in a fight.

I could care less what people do behind closed doors - but what p*sses me off is how many smoke it and drive. Everyday on my commutes I encounter people doing it.

I pass the same dispensary on the way home every workday - and I have nearly been hit 3 or 4 times by people coming or going. I once seen a dude in a small black SUV run over the median, get air, and nearly hit a power poll trying to make it to this particular dispensary.

I worked with a dude in his twenties - who literally smoked himself stupid. We watched the decline in real-time. Over a period of four years after he started heavily smoking it - he got more and more useless till it got him fired. Completely normal guy, to a complete vegetable in pretty short order.

I worked at a shop that was across the street from a grow facility (Deer valley and Central) and the people coming and going out of that place to work looked like the cast of "Half Baked." Lol. They had to cut down all the trees around the building because employees were going on break and trying to hide in the trees to smoke what they were growing. Probably the only legal business model where 80% of the payroll goes right back into the place. They had to crane their safe in through the roof, it was massive as at the time (or still is, I don't know) it was/is a cash business. We had constant battles to keep them out of our private parking lot (we were across the street) cause we had covered parking. We had to have their security guard find out who owned what car and move it from our lot all the time. Last thing we needed was some person high as a kite and door dinging a million dollar plus car.....

Like all things, moderation is the key. And like most things were moderation is key - most people can't moderate their habits. Big surprise lol.

I think the quality or type of refer being available today too may lead to the impression it makes young people stupid. I may or may not have partaken of the devils weed in my last year of high school and my first year of college. So we are talking maybe 1980- 82ish. It was fun .. you got the giggles, talked about stupid sh*t with your friends, got the munchies and stopped at white castle, took a nap. The whole experience and all its phases lasted maybe an hour. It was admittedly a fun time.

After it became legal here someone gave my wife and I a joint.

Yeah sounds like you got a sativa strain. Hate those. They tend to give you palpitations and paranoia. Not fun. You needed an indica hybrid with mainly indica as the dominant strain and a lower thc amount (60-70%). A pen would be better as you can control how much you take in without getting stone cold stupid and just catching a buzz to chill out with the Mrs. and have a good time like back in the day.

This is all in Minecraft of course.
