Too funny, that's exactly how my jobs vacation works, you put your request at the beginning of the year ( usually as far as your seniority can hold), they then tell you when you can have it.
You have from now till when they tell you, to apply for and hopefully get some vac time off, whatever time you have left when the date they chose arrives, you are forced off, with nothing left for the rest of the year.

Yikes.

For the first 3-4 years your vacation is January, I've got 15yrs in and my vacation is around May/June.

What is it that you do that makes dealing with that BS worth it?

RR Conductor, mandatory union job, everything is based on seniority.
Work 2 days, 3 days off, repeat.

My company doesn't "force" us to take it per se. They let us roll over unused time to the next year, but you stop accruing it once you reach your yearly allotment. So, if you use it, you will continue to get more.
