Man killed a catalytic converter thief and dragged the body behind his truck, police say

Whats old is new again. I remember when stealing Catalytic converters were the rage especially in the more disreputable areas of NYC back in the second half of the 70s.

They are expensive to buy so guys were selling them second hand since yours was probably stolen and ... they are loaded up with precious metals so you can make a fair bit of change from scrapping if you arent one to sell on the street.

There are levels to jackals .. Some will slink around and steal your stuff and resell it like what was going on with airbags but there is a risk of getting busted on the selling end since you have the property

Others are even lower on the food chain and only skirt the shadows and wouldnt make it in the joint so they just steel them and scrap em. Less of a return but hey .. its free money.

Cant go around shooting dudes even if it feels right but the truth is .. the thief probably would have been hit with a Misdemeanor and be out before breakfast especially if it in one of the newly created bail free cities.

No great loss but homey with the gun is going to regret getting caught. Note to self ... leave bodies where they lie and drive away.

Seems reasonable.

I was hoping the story read "Man stealing catalytic converter drug underneath vehicle till death when owner drove off"

That would be even better. Would be hopefully a long, long meat-stripe down the road.

F*ck thieves.

A friend of mine dabbles in buying wrecked trucks and parting them out. He gets upwards of $1,500.00 from some of the converters.

bummer he got caught, hanging the mo fo from a street light might have been quite effective, with parts missing and i'm not talking about a converter

i gave my nephew a sweet tacoma that i had lifted big ass tires etc- first night at his place they broke into it n stole a microtech knife i gave him- i told him to gtfo of that hood- last weekend he calks n says they stole his cat.

The second gen Tacomas are a big target.
On my 09 I took a piece of 10 or 12 Ga. galv. sheet metal I forget the thickness and made a protective shield, kind of looked like a skid plate to protect them as my truck was parked outside all the time.
They got my sons first gen a couple years before.
No jack needed on those trucks.

Scrap yards pay quick cash because of the platinum content.

Toyota trucks and SUVs. Especially older models seem to be the worst hit. Like 10 years ago in California I remember people welding sheet metal over the cat to deter it.

One tweaker with a sawzall can hit a single parking lot and leave with 3 or 4 in minutes.
