In order to strengthen 🇱🇹Lithuania's national defense, from now on, members of 🇱🇹professional military service, 🇱🇹The National Defense Volunteer Forces and 🇱🇹Lithuanian Riflemen's Union will be allowed to purchase and keep automatic rifles of the highest category in their homes.

That means an H&K G36 in every soldier's closet.

Back when Lithuania was waiting to receive their M-14’s from Anniston (circa 1998) there was a lot of discussion in the country about issuing them to their SKAT (their version of a national guard-acronym/name for them was later changed) and these rifles would reside in the homes of the volunteers. Obviously this didn’t sit too well with some folks in their government-mostly the old former Communists. More nationalistic Lithuanians pointed out there was rather large historical precedent for SKAT soldiers keeping their weapons close at hand.

A lot of people know that the Germans invaded Poland in 1939 but few recall the Soviets ALSO invaded Poland AND the Baltic's as well under provisions in the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact. In fact the date of the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact is kind of a day of mourning in Lithuania. At the time the rifles for the Lithuanian reserve forces were kept in local arsenals scattered around the country. When the Red Army began their invasion Lithuanians were standing by to receive the announcement to mobilize and draw their weapons at the armories in order to fight the Soviets. But that order never came because the NKVD had bribed the commanding general to stand down. A lot of Lithuanians SKAT members therefore believed they should keep their rifle at home in order to prevent the same thing from reoccurring. The fact the Lithuanian government is authorizing this is kind of a big deal….especially in an EU country.

The Commie Albanians used to keep their weapons at home as well... but they were (rightly?) paranoid about invasion from both USA and Soviets.

True, not exactly. But close enough to be of note. As THAT GUY stated,...for this to happen in hoplophobic Europe is a big deal.

You learn something new every day. I did not previously know they had been resisting the Reds that late after the war was supposedly over.
