Before members of the LAPD bomb squad destroyed part of a South L.A. neighborhood by exploding a stash of illegal fireworks last summer, they repeatedly ignored warnings from one of their most experienced technicians that the plan was not safe, according to a new report by the LAPD’s inspector general.

In a past career I worked with a lot of military EOD folks and I’ve never met such a dialed in group of people in my life which was quite remarkable because even SF, SEAL’s, and Rangers will invariably have a clunker or two within their ranks (I’ve met some). So I’ve no doubt the LAPD bomb tech cautioned against this. You know how so many cops due to hubris and ego think they know every damn thing in the world (especially when it comes to guns)? When a cop thinks he/she is right there is nothing that can change their mind and invariably when they lose the debate or can’t defend their position with the facts out comes the citation book. That’s what happened here, the ranking LEO on scene made the decision and it didn’t matter what the facts were.
