Kids firearms

Hey guys new here. I have been shooting for about 8 years on my own but want my boys to come out with me on every trip. My 13 year old is showing interest in truly learning. I want to get him gun of his own. Not sure if I should jump in to rifle rounds or get a 22lr or 9mm AR for him to start. Also how do you guys feel about a 7 year old on shooting trips. Any input would help fellas.

Shooters world had some kids classes anyone know if they are worth it for them? Any other suggestions for other classes?

My Dad started me when I was 5 or 6 and a .22 is probably the best way to get them started.

A 22 is the way to go. Something not semi auto is my suggestion. This will keep them from just blasting away and focusing on marksmanship.

I took my boys out as early as 5 just to get them used to the environment. I've taken adults out that weren't ready either. Alot has to do with desire to learn and maturity. It's going to be your call but 7 should be a good age.

I started early too (probably 5 or 6 like a few others here), but my boy (12 y.o.) has absolutely zero interest. Maybe he'll come around, maybe not. I'd rather him decide that it's something he's interested in than me forcing him to do it just because I enjoy it.

I also second the above recommendation for a bolt/lever action .22 repeater. It shouldn't take long until he's ready to progress to something a bit more "fun."

Magpul Backpacker 10/22 seems like the type of gun you’d never outgrow, especially the stainless version with the threaded barrel.

There’s a compact Ruger American .22 bolt action that has 10/22 magazine compatibility too.

You may want to consider a suppressor like the Rugged Oculus through a SilencerShop trust as well.

It’ll take a while but will make shooting more comfortable.

I started on my oldest grandson on a BB gun when he was 6, after he got some of the rules of gun handling like finger off the trigger, aware of muzzle pointing (not sweeping anyone etc.) and backstop, I proceeded to a pellet gun, a little after his 7th B-day I took him out and he shot a .22, Mini 30 and a lever action with .38 Spl, he had a blast (literally) we haven't gone back out but plan to this summer.

On the flip side, my other grandson at 7 is still on BB gun, he's still on the nintendo frame of mind when it comes with guns, I'm not pushing it and letting him get it on his own.

As for a beginning class, I can recommend 'Wild Bunch' at BA.

About an hour of classroom time. Instructor covers basic firearm safety, different types of a firearms, ammo, etc. Then they come out to the small bore range and shoot steel targets, both 22 handgun and rifle (about 1 1/2 hrs or until they run out of ammo). There is one instructor per shooter. All firearms and ammo provided by G&F.

The kids have a blast.

Which Firearm?

Caliber is something you and your child must decide. Only recommendation I have, is, ONLY HAVE ONE CHILD SHOOTING AT A TIME, AND ALWAYS HAVE IT AS A ONE ON ONE INSTRUCTIONS LESSON!

By "one on one" I mean ,... you are within arms length of the weapon being used.
