Just got back from Sprouts with Mrs. Flash. The cashier, a young lady in her early 20s probably, couldn't figure out what the total was when you subtracted this:

$95.65
-$19.95

She came up with $65.XX and are you ready for this?..........

She used the calculator on her cell phone and did it 3 times, each time with the same result.

I did it in my head, but she wouldn't accept that, so I did it on my cell phone calculator. She still didn't accept it, so she brought over her manager who accepted my total with no question.

I can't believe I pay taxes to fund this kind of "education". A High School grad can't do 3rd grade math even with a calculator in her hand.

I would have paid the $65 rather than the correct $75! ;)

I couldn't because we had a coupon for $10.00 of if the total was $75.00 or more....so I ended up paying $65.00 anyway.

Its funny .. one of my early jobs was as a cashier. I had just turned 15 and it was a supermarket in east NY Brooklyn. Back then .. the register was very simple. It was one with a big giant button to complete the transaction.

You had to figure out tax, separate taxable goods, separate out wic eligible stuff, make change in your head, subtract wic checks and you had the added fun of every con artist in the hood trying to shake you up with stupid con games.

Did that job for over a year ... drawer never came up short. Had everyone in the nieghborhood try and shake me.

I went to public school in a sh*t hole neighborhood serving the projects rats of which I was one. Yea .. it must be about needing more money for education.

Back then though .. there were separate classes for different levels of proficiency and if you didnt pass you got left back and NO ONE gave a fugin rats a$$ about your feelings

I walked into McDonalds a few years ago and had a bunch of the Sacagawea gold-color dollar coins, so I paid for my order with those. The young girl just looked at me and said, I'm sorry sir, we only take American money.

Well, at least she was working and not sitting on her ass somewhere doing drugs.

Some people are on the upper end of the I.Q. bell curve and then there are some people who are down on the other end. I have worked with some real sharp people and some who are not so sharp. The important thing is that they were all contributing to society in their own way. This cashier is obviously not neurosurgeon or astrophysicist material but she is at least out there working a job as best she can.

Amen. The sun doesn't always shine down on everyone like it does to Flash.

lol, not defending flash as he can do himself, the comments are valid, in my opinion wasn't about the gal being unable to do the math, it was about the system we are taxed on that failed to teach her the fundamentals of addn and subtractn, simple math is actually quite easy if given the tools to do it.
and i applaud anyone who is willing to work, whether qualified or not, but hey, maybe you want someone who doesn't know how to put a lug nut on your tire after repair, just saying
Rj

RJ is right, I'm not knocking the cashier, just the system that I pay a lot of bucks into.

It's not her fault that the teachers and administrators don't care if they educate kids and no one holds them responsible.

The cashier is just the logical product of the teachers and administrators incompetence. I feel sorry for her.

Try giving them a $2 bill. I did a couple of years ago. She went and got her manager and said I was trying to use counterfeit money. He had to explain that it was legitimate. She thought we where working together to try and trick her.

It's our reliance on ever evolving technology. We don't have to use or exercise our brain power like before.
How many phone numbers did you remember before cell phones were a thing?? I don't know either of my sons phone number or almost anyone else's now.

The old farts on here complain about cashiers(and almost everyone else) not being able to do the math, yet they are also the ones that aren't proficient(past turning on) at computers, smart phones, new TV's, whereas, the younger generation are very proficient in these areas and more. How many of you can transfer photos, contacts, or other data from one phone to another via Bluetooth??? My guess, not many.

For example:
My stepmom in Las Vegas has a masters degree in psychology but needed help getting her Google Meet to work on her computer so she can speak to students in Las Vegas, my 25 year old son who used to work for the IT dept. for a school district in the Prescott area, but now works at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University had to help her out to get her mic to work.

Quit being so judgemental and be more compassionate and understanding, like a good human does.

I often see examples like the one in OP, do you think those individuals can apply critical thinking, see facebook bullshit, the bothched math is a small problem with those types.

I know they don't do critical thinking or logic and I don't do Facebook. I did Nextdoor for around a week and then got so ticked off that I quit going there. Too many idiots and people incapable of thinking for themselves and blaming others for their own shortcomings.

I'm an Electronic Engineer, an old fart, been retired from the first retirement for 15 years, the second one for 3 years almost and am extremely proficient with computers smart phones, smartTVs(got two) and all technology. I an do all of those things and many more that the younger generation can only dream about.

Made my living the last 15 years designing and programming situation rooms for all the larger technology companies, NASA, the FAA, HP, Oracle, on and on, plus Homeland Security.

There are a lot of old farts that can do all of that and more.

That's great, what you say enlightens all of us of you and how highly you think of yourself.

What you didn't say though, really, truly speaks volumes about you. Not one word defending your character after I said:
"Quit being so judgemental and be more compassionate and understanding, like a good human does."

You couldn't wait to get home from Sprouts, sit down at your computer and start a new thread about how some cashier couldn't do the math and how you are so personally appalled and offended, that it is an affront to your life.
And, you actually thought people would want to hear about your lively Sprouts experience with a cashier who is trying to eek out a meager living having to deal with customers who look down their nose at other people, who go home a write about it on the internet.

Every sentence in your original posting, except the opening line is condescending. There are no shortage of old farts like you, miserable, angry, bitter, judgemental, lacking any empathy or compassion and on and on

If you didn't have anything to complain about, you would complain about that.

describes me to a "T"...ask anyone.

(*judgmental...there is no "e" after the "g")

Defend my character? What are you smoking? I don't explain myself to people like you, never have and never will.

You really are a miserable person aren't you?

You probably have grown children and grandchildren that can't do 3rd grade math either.
