Some of these words only have the meaning they are trying to indicate, under specific context. To someone raised up North or in the Western states, picnic just means taking a lunch to eat out under a tree on a nice day... nothing more.
I can't say what it means in the south as I didn't grow up there...
and I really don't care...

I grew up in the south. Never in my lifetime before now have I heard this theory. Personally I think it is from someone trying to make their mark with the "woke" crowd.

No .. you just cant hijack the word ascribe some imagined offense to it and have it be one of the new forbidden terms.

I find it very unlikely that southerns were routinely burning blacks at the stake while indulging in fine southern fair from a blanket in the grass nearby. Stupid.

Its like when the White supremacist hijacked the "OK" sign .. not ok .. it still just means ok to me and I wont be offended by someone using it or be in fear of using it myself if the mood struck and I was overwhelmed with the need to acknowledge someone with a non verbal "OK" response.

Sick of people ascribing new and often mistaken meanings to regular old words but .. I only get to read about it because I would never allow people in my inner circle who would try and tell me about the black people burning while others were eating fried fish off a blanket so I am unlikely to meet anyone who ascribes to this philosophy of being butt hurt by everything that preceded them.

"picnic" or "picaninny"?

One is Yogi and Boo Boo's favorite meal in a basket and the other is Ex Gov. Evan Mecham's claim to fame.
