Phoenix,
so, have a daughter who is planning a road trip, and she wants to power some odds and ends, so who can school me on inverters, i'm assuming she'd want to run her lap top, maybe a powered cooler as she has a new born, ect.

i know nada, trying to find info on webs is real, but tough to understand some of the stuff.
so if someone can share thoughts, shes now powering a sub station,
thanks
rj

You talking 12v or gas power inverters??? The small ones will run small electrical devices from your cigarette lighter point, and the gas driven will give clean 110 to a few devices.

You will need to figure out the wattage of the stuff she wants to run. It's typically right on the label.

One thing that she/you would want to find out is if the accessory socket has power when the car is off. Some of the 12v coolers will plug right into the acc. socket.

Might want to look into a dual battery set up with a battery isolator and run the inverter off the second battery. This way she doesn’t discharge the main battery but will still charge the second when the car is running. But you will need to know what wattage she needs.

All said and done this might cost you as much as a small 2k watt gas generator and that might be easier for her to troubleshoot if needed.

Check out tractor supply. Sometimes they have sales on small ones. I picked up a 1k genny for $200 a few months back. Compact and quiet. Just get a 4 stroke genny

I got one of these for long haul power needs while in motion- Euhomy 12 Volt Refrigerator, 45Liter(they come smaller). Actually freezes one side 12v sits in back seat of the truck. My truck has a 110 power plug rated at 150 which runs my laptop fine. As others have mentioned you can get inverters that will run higher watts if needed off 12v cig plug(for under a $100). If she is doing hotel stops the cooler also runs off 110. These are the cheapest simple route in my experience. All store away without any extra wiring or screwing with your vehicle. I use the potable cooler all the time even camping or tailgating. Good luck sir.

You can usually run up to about 120w form a 12V cigarette socket before things start to get dicey, which usually comes from overheating in the connector, the cigarette lighter socket was not initially designed as a power port and does a poor job at that function.

Most laptops are in the ~60w range so that should be no problem on a little power inverter, and most travel fridges have a direct 12V input so that it will not need to run through an inverter but plug in to a cigarette socket directly.

What about one of those portable battery packs? Should power all that stuff for a day and be rechargeable overnight when stopped. Some even have solar panels add ons to recharge with. This could keep the depend off the 12v socket and no worry's about killing the vehicle battery or popping a fuse.

I’m running a 400w Duracell unit

Ran my leads to the battery.

Meets my needs.
