The incompetence at Discount isn't with the sales guys. It's with the people that torque the lug nuts. I've made a point to talk to the guys doing my tires. I'll tell them the torque value, and they've never listened. They just grab an impact wrench and send it.

I've always had the exact opposite experience with the tire guys as Discount. Set the nuts softly with the impact, set the car back on the ground, go around and hit them all with the torque wrench.

Maybe try a different location.

Discount is big on torque procedures they torque everything. They don’t even mess with oversize or undersize wheels and tires anymore. Of its not spec size they almost always refuse to work on it.

I'll tell them the torque value, and they've never listened. They just grab an impact wrench and send it. That's the problem I've had at most of the auto shops that I've ever used. They do things fast, and they take shortcuts. That or they're just not very bright. I at least have some sympathy for those poor souls.

The last auto shop I used up in North Phoenix left a really bad taste in my mouth, and they were supposed to have a great reputation. I didn't even bring my car in. I just brought them my wheel hubs. I didn't have the right punch set, and I didn't want to booger up the hub knocking out the old bearing races with the wrong tools, so I left it to the professionals. At the same time, I asked them to remove the stubborn bolts holding on the brake rotors to the hub, and I supplied them with brand new brake rotors to install. For the first time in years, I trusted my old Mercedes with someone else on a simple straightforward job, and they still figured out how to mess it up.

They called me up to tell me that the races were out and that they removed the old rotors, but that the new rotors were the wrong size. I get down there and look at it on the bench with them. First of all, they scarred the hub up getting one of the bearing races out which is what I was hoping to avoid by taking it to them. Then, they showed me the brake rotors and how they didn't fit. Now, picture a brake rotor with 10 holes. That's two sets of 5 holes with different bolt patterns. They lined up the wrong set of bolt holes. I looked at it for one second, and then rotated the rotor one tenth of a rotation to align the right holes, and then I just stared at the mechanic while he scratched his head for a moment. All of that to say, I have big-time trust issues with mechanics.

I recently picked up a 100 series Land Cruiser and they tend to need mechanics that specialize in them since they're built so different than most other Toyotas. Hopefully, I can find a good shop and learn to let go.

I hear ya! This is my trade and something I take great pride in. It’s sad to see what the industry has become and is heading. The talent pool is dwindling fast and those that are experienced and care about what they do leave the industry as they are tired of getting their shit kicked in everyday with all the headaches to make a paycheck.

Yep. I ordered some slightly larger tires for my TBSS. They wouldn't install them, even though the guy let me order them through the store...

I was a Honda/Acura tech for about 12 years. The BS just got to be too much. It wasn't the work, it was the customers constantly bitching that you were trying to rip them off.

"Uh, you brought your car to me because it is broken, this is a list of what it needs. Fix it or don't, I don't care. You'll be taking the bus, not me...."

lol, customers don't get me started, put on a new front door and its your fault the water heater leaks, or the ac quit working, funny chit, and frustrating cause most are so freaken ignorant they can't comprehend a simple discussion, instead they want to puff up and threaten all kinds of shiat. i giggle sometimes which pisses them off more, but hey, its life, i gotta enjoy it sometimes

I am working on the perfect business model with no Customers and no Employees. Still have not perfected it yet. But truly customer service has suffered a lot this last 2 years. People still drive most CS and the people are the problem now as well. There will always be asshole customers regardless of business type. But hopefully the good ones are far more numerous. Happy TaTa Tuesday!

I worked 5 years at Ford(next to suncity) at a retail dealer and another 7 at a Ford commercial dealer. After that I left the dealer to manage a commercial fleet for a private company. 5 years in the retail side was enough for me! I would never go back to a dealer let along a retail one. Dont even get me started on the warranty procedures or thievery the management pulls on technicians.

The ever since complaints are the worst. I even had one dude complain that there wasn't finger prints under the hood to prove I worked on it.
