Don't be out in your backyard with a gun after midnight. If you hear a commotion, and/or sirens, going out into your backyard with a gun has several potential bad outcomes, getting shot by a cop being only one of them. Maybe get your gun, check to make sure all the doors are locked, and hunker down.

I agree.
While defending you home going out side at night is not a great option.
Low or no light can give the intruder an advantage.
Sorry this homeowner was shot.

I will cede the yard, but doors and windows are that famous red line. Cops will along soon helos and spots. Once a guy who was run to ground was on infrared camera from above, he decided to not fire his shotgun at anyone but himself, impressive on infrared.

Several years ago, I was awakened by the unmistakable sound of an AK and an AR in a fight. Almost immediately after, red and blues flashing in front of my house. Cops all around the area. Choppers. Not knowing if they caught the guy, or what happened. I started to go out. But, thought about walking out to get cop shot.

So, I sat in the living room all night, with my Benelli M2. Wide awake. It took till morning for things to calm down outside.
