Well, good luck! It's a pricey hobby, but a lot of fun. I used to fly a lot with my family growing up, and I'd love to get my license for fixed-wing.

Depends on how quickly you learn, but anywhere from $20k-25k is average for most. Some folks can do it quicker, but the average is about 70hrs of training for a private license.

So is that $20-25k for fixed wing? I assume rotary is a very different ball game?

No, fixed wing is around half that, give or take. Helicopters are super expensive and more difficult to learn on, so they cost a good deal more.
 
A friend of mine retired as a navy pilot then flew commercial planes for another 20+ years.
He said he wouldn't fly in a helicopter.
I ask him why and he said " There are too many moving parts ".
Personally I loved riding in helicopters. I never thought about all the moving parts.

Hahaha, you guys crack me up!

The old joke is the Jesus nut, but truth be told, Ballistic Therapy is more correct. Anything falls off the rotor head assembly, and you’re gonna have a bad day. All the more reason to do a thorough pre-flight! :)

Helicopters are actually quite safe overall, but I love the mystic that all this unwarranted fear provides, like we’re the wild cowboys of the sky. Because that’s exactly what we are. Jet fighter pilots can only wish that their balls were as big as our.

Helicopter pilots: because fighter jocks need heroes, too! :lol:
