Holy crap.

Was that him blasting through his windshield (class 3?) or the cops blasting him?

Looks like the first volley of fire was from the inside of the truck directed towards the officers...rate of fire looks a lot like full auto, or at least very fast trigger work.

The thing that always amazes me in these situations was that no one on the opposite side of the freeway traffic was hit by stray rounds. Also, feel free to close off traffic from the other direction, either Phoenix PD or DPS. I know these situations are fluid and it can be difficult to judge where the PIT maneuver was to be attempted, but a little collaboration with local PD would be helpful.

It was him shooting through his windshield...followed by the officers returning fire through theirs.

Glass was blasting outwards in both cases.

Because he was acting "suspicious" and "might" have a gun. Or at least, that's what was in the article I read.

That's the last phrase I read from news was someone reported him "threatening/brandishing" the gun.

Notice all the smoke. Must have been big clouds of the stuff inside the vehicles. (Something not shown in the movie Heat.)

Recoilless rifles aren't. Bulletproof vests aren't. Silencers aren't. Smokeless powder isn't.

Lessons for us: If we ever have to shoot inside a vehicle, we should be prepared for (and not surprised or deterred by) instant deafness from the noise, and obscured vision from the smoke.

Yep,...it seems he likely had a surplus U.S. Gubamint M16.

And he probably did not get a background check before he acquired that gun! If only we had universal background checks!

Close the MCSO loophole. It's just common sense commonsense.

Yeah, just like a page from Obama's playbook, according to Penzone the stolen MCSO guns that were used are his predecessors fault. So Sheriff Joe was to blame---not him.

Lets take him right there when the Durango curve is 3 miles ahead with a nice what 30-40' backstop to protect opposite direction traffic with little on the other side as well.

Well I wouldn't say it was his fault.

He blames the theft of the guns or the shootout itself on Sheriff Joe?
